10 Best 9-1-1 Characters of All Time, Ranked

15 min read

If you have ever finished a 9-1-1 episode and immediately argued with a friend about who the best character is, you are not alone. The show has run long enough that its fans have strong views on the firefighters at Station 118, the dispatchers who keep the phones answered, and the family members who keep getting pulled into the chaos.

This list ranks the ten characters we think have done the most to shape the show, based on their storylines, the performances behind them and how well they hold up across the series. Each entry covers who the character is, the actor who plays them, where they begin, the central conflict and the stakes, followed by an explanation of why they sit where they do.

10. Karen Wilson

Karen Wilson from 9-1-1

Karen Wilson is the wife of Hen Wilson, played by Tracie Thoms. She is an aerospace engineer, and her first credited appearance is a guest role in season 4, episode 7, "There Goes the Neighborhood." Karen comes into a household already shaped by Hen's history, and her story centres on building a family with Hen. Together they adopt Denny and foster Mara, which puts Karen in the middle of a home that is always busy and never quite settled.

Thoms plays Karen with a steadiness that suits the character. Karen is rarely the loudest person in a scene, but she is often the one who asks the question nobody else wants to answer. The writing gives her practical problems to work through, such as parenting decisions and the logistics of a blended household, rather than making her a device for other people's emotional arcs.

The problem is that Karen is not given enough space to become a full centre of the show. When she appears, she adds warmth and grounded perspective, but many of her scenes exist to support Hen or the wider Station 118 family. That keeps her at the bottom of this list.

Why it ranks here: Karen is at number 10 because her contribution is real but limited in screen time. She is ahead of the newest guests on this list only because her role has a clearer throughline, and she still sits behind May Grant, who has a bigger arc across more seasons.

Best for: viewers who enjoy a stable, grown-up relationship at the heart of a busy ensemble.

9. May Grant

May Grant from 9-1-1

May Grant is the daughter of Athena Grant and Michael Grant, played by Corinne Massiah. She starts as a recurring presence in season 1 and becomes a main character from season 2, with a run that continues through season 6 and returns in season 9. Early on, May is a teenager trying to figure out who she is while her parents' marriage ends and her family reshapes itself around that change.

Massiah gives May a sharper, more restless energy than the show's older characters. May is often caught between wanting independence and needing her family, and the writing lets her make real mistakes. Her time working as a dispatcher in seasons 4 and 5 gives the series a useful look at the emergency call centre from a younger, less experienced point of view.

The arc is uneven. Some storylines, including her later relationship with Ravi in season 9, feel rushed, and May sometimes becomes a sounding board for other characters rather than someone driving her own story. Even so, the show gives her real stakes, and she grows up on screen in a way that feels earned.

Why it ranks here: May ranks at number 9 because she has more story momentum than Karen Wilson but less than the regulars above her. She edges out Karen because she is a main character for much of the series, and she sits below Maddie Buckley because Maddie's storylines carry heavier emotional and dramatic weight across the run.

Best for: viewers who like coming-of-age arcs woven into a procedural drama.

8. Maddie Buckley

Maddie Buckley from 9-1-1

Maddie Buckley, played by Jennifer Love Hewitt, joins as a 911 dispatcher in season 2, replacing Abby Clark. She is Buck's sister, and her introduction gives the series a second anchor in the call centre. Maddie's season 2 storyline is one of the darkest in the show, as she survives an abduction by her abusive ex-husband, Doug Kendall, who is killed in the same season.

Hewitt commits fully to the role. Maddie is at her most compelling when she is quietly holding herself together, and the show does not hurry past the aftermath of trauma. The later plot about postpartum depression, and Maddie's decision to leave for Boston in season 5, gives Hewitt material that asks for restraint and honesty.

The weakness is that the show sometimes treats Maddie's recovery as a set of episodes rather than a long process. Her relationship with Chimney Han, whom she marries in season 7, is handled warmly, but there are stretches where her own choices are subordinated to the men around her.

Why it ranks here: Maddie is at number 8 because her arc is among the strongest in the series, but she is not quite as central as the firefighters ranked above her. She sits above May Grant because her storylines carry heavier stakes, and below Chimney because his development is more consistently shown across the show.

Best for: viewers who want emotionally serious storylines inside a high-energy procedural.

7. Howard "Chimney" Han

Howard "Chimney" Han from 9-1-1

Howard "Chimney" Han, played by Kenneth Choi, is a captain at Station 118 and one of the show's original main characters from season 1. He is also Maddie's husband from season 7 onward. Chimney's early storylines include a serious rebar injury in season 1 and a stabbing in season 2, and the show uses these events to test how far he will go to protect his crew and his family.

Choi plays Chimney with a warmth that makes the firefighting scenes feel personal. He is often the team's steady voice, and his humour keeps the tone from tipping into bleakness. The writing gives him room to be funny and fragile in the same episode, which is a difficult balance.

The show sometimes leans on Chimney as a moral benchmark, which flattens his conflicts. When he is written as the reasonable one in every argument, there is less tension in his choices. His story still lands because Choi makes each choice feel like it costs something.

Why it ranks here: Chimney is number 7 because he is a dependable core character who appears across almost the whole run, but his arcs are less distinctive than the ones above him. He is ahead of Hen Wilson because his personal storylines, especially with Maddie, carry more weight, and behind Eddie and Buck because they drive more of the show's emotional conflict.

Best for: viewers who enjoy a witty, loyal firehouse ensemble.

6. Hen Wilson

Hen Wilson from 9-1-1

Hen Wilson, played by Aisha Hinds, is a firefighter and paramedic at Station 118 and a main character from season 1. She is married to Karen Wilson, and she steps into interim captain duties during periods when Bobby Nash is away. Hen's central conflict is about balancing the job's physical danger with her responsibilities as a parent and a leader who has to make calls other people will question.

Hinds gives Hen authority without making her cold. Hen is at her best when the show lets her be decisive in a crisis and then honest about what the decision cost her. Her medical expertise also gives the show some of its most grounded scenes, because the audience sees a competent professional doing difficult work.

The character is sometimes boxed in by the leadership plots around her. When Hen is elevated to captain-level responsibility, the storylines can become more about procedure and politics than about her as a person. That keeps her from matching the emotional range of the characters ranked higher.

Why it ranks here: Hen is at number 6 because she is one of the most consistent and capable characters on the show, yet her arc is less personal than the entries above her. She ranks above Christopher Diaz because she is a series regular with a longer track record of leadership, and below Bobby Nash because his role as captain carries more of the station's conflict.

Best for: viewers who like competent, grounded leads who handle crises with calm.

5. Christopher Diaz

Christopher Diaz from 9-1-1

Christopher Diaz, played by Gavin McHugh, is the son of Eddie Diaz. He is born with cerebral palsy, and his introduction in season 2 brings the show's attention to a family that has to plan around his needs. Christopher's story moves between school, medical care and the question of who will look after him when his father is in danger. In season 4, Buck is named his legal guardian, which gives Buck one of his most important responsibilities.

McHugh gives Christopher a clear presence on screen. The character is written as a child with his own opinions and humour rather than a symbol of hardship, and that choice is what makes his storylines work. When Christopher leaves for Texas in season 7 and returns in season 8, the show makes the separation feel real for everyone who loves him.

The character can be used more as a plot engine than as a person, especially when his health becomes a crisis for the adults around him. Some of the strongest moments come from his relationships with his father and with Buck, while some of the weaker ones turn Christopher into a reason for other characters to make decisions.

Why it ranks here: Christopher is number 5 because he has one of the most emotionally important relationships in the series, but he is mostly a supporting presence in the story. He ranks above Hen Wilson because his arc has bigger stakes for the core family, and below Bobby Nash because Bobby's leadership shapes the station's major arcs.

Best for: viewers who appreciate stories about family responsibility and care.

4. Bobby Nash

Bobby Nash from 9-1-1

Bobby Nash, played by Peter Krause, is the captain of Station 118 and a main character from season 1 through season 8. He is the leader who holds the team together through disasters, personal losses and the pressure of running a fire station in Los Angeles. His central conflict is the tension between protecting his crew and making hard decisions that the department and the public will judge.

Krause brings a quiet authority to Bobby. He rarely needs to raise his voice to command a scene, and his grief and exhaustion are visible in small reactions rather than big speeches. The writing gives him some of the show's most affecting moments, especially in the later seasons, where his choices carry visible consequences.

Bobby's death in season 8, in the episode "Lab Rats," is one of the most significant losses in the series. The show's weakness is that Bobby's personal life outside the station sometimes stays underdeveloped, and some of his decisions serve the plot rather than his character. Even so, his presence shapes the entire station.

Why it ranks here: Bobby is number 4 because his leadership defines more of the series than any character below him, and his death gives the show a lasting emotional weight. He sits below Athena Grant because her storyline covers more of the show's themes and runs across more seasons, and above Christopher Diaz because his role carries more of the central conflict.

Best for: viewers who like a steady, principled leader with a complicated private life.

3. Athena Grant

Athena Grant from 9-1-1

Athena Grant, played by Angela Bassett, appears from the pilot onward. She starts as an LAPD patrol sergeant and is a single mother with a complicated history, including a marriage to Michael Grant and, later, a relationship with Bobby Nash. The central conflict of her arc is the tension between duty to the department and the needs of her children, May and Harry. Her career and private life are constantly in conflict, and the stakes rise every time a case threatens her family.

Bassett is one of the strongest performers on the show. Athena is controlled and precise in public, but Bassett lets the cracks show in the moments when Athena has to admit she is afraid or wrong. The writing gives her a range that few other characters receive, from tense procedural scenes to tender family moments.

The character is sometimes written as the show's authority figure in ways that feel repetitive. The season 9 move into detective work is a welcome change, though some storylines lean too heavily on her being the only competent person in the room.

Why it ranks here: Athena is number 3 because she has the widest range of any character on this list, and Bassett makes nearly every storyline feel more serious. She sits below Eddie Diaz and Buck because their arcs are more tightly connected to the firefighting storylines that define the show, but she ranks above Bobby Nash because her presence spans the entire series.

Best for: viewers who want a strong lead with a long, layered arc.

2. Eddie Diaz

Eddie Diaz from 9-1-1

Eddie Diaz, played by Ryan Guzman, is a firefighter at Station 118 and an Army veteran. He is a main character from season 2 onward and the father of Christopher Diaz. Eddie's central conflict is the weight of his past, including his military service and his estranged marriage to Shannon Diaz, and the way that weight affects his ability to be present for his son and his crew. He quits the department in season 5 and rejoins after the call centre fire, which makes his return one of the show's key turning points.

Guzman gives Eddie a physical confidence that works well in the rescue scenes, but the performance is most effective when Eddie is quiet and uncertain. He is the character who makes the audience feel the cost of every mistake, and the writing lets him carry guilt, pride and love in the same look. His relationships with Buck and Christopher are the emotional backbone of several seasons.

The weakness is that Eddie sometimes becomes a romantic obstacle or a source of drama for other characters. When his personal life is written as a set of plot complications rather than a continuing emotional line, the character loses some of the depth that makes him so memorable.

Why it ranks here: Eddie is number 2 because he is one of the most emotionally complete characters on the show, and his departure and return hit harder than almost any other storyline. He sits directly below Buck because Buck's arc has more consistent development across the series, while Eddie's best material is concentrated in fewer seasons.

Best for: viewers who want a wounded hero whose growth is visible from season to season.

1. Evan "Buck" Buckley

Evan "Buck" Buckley from 9-1-1

Evan "Buck" Buckley, played by Oliver Stark, is a firefighter at Station 118 and Maddie's brother. He is a main character from season 1 onward. Buck begins as a charming, impulsive firefighter who avoids long-term commitment, and the central conflict of his arc is learning how to be responsible to other people without losing the spontaneity that makes him good at the job. The stakes rise through the series, including a lightning strike in season 6 and an opioid dependency storyline in season 9.

Stark plays Buck with an openness that makes his mistakes forgivable and his growth believable. The writing gives him comedy, grief, romance and physical danger, often in the same episode. What works best is that Buck's vulnerability is never treated as a punchline. The show trusts him to be a complicated adult.

The weakness is that some of Buck's storylines repeat the same beats of reckless choice, emotional fallout and redemption. When the show gets stuck in that loop, the character loses momentum, but the strongest episodes give him enough space to show real change.

Why it ranks here: Buck is number 1 because his arc has the most consistent emotional development across the series, and Stark carries it through every major shift. Eddie Diaz is the strongest competitor, and the comparison is close. Eddie's season 5 departure and return are powerful, but Buck is present for more of the show's biggest turning points, from his early reckless phase to his later responsibilities as guardian to Christopher. Eddie is the better example of a single devastating arc, while Buck is the better example of a character who keeps changing across a decade of storytelling.

Best for: viewers who want the most complete character journey on the show.

Conclusion: What the Strongest Choices Share

The strongest entries on this list have one thing in common: their storylines keep changing the people around them. Eddie, Athena and Buck are not defined by a single crisis. Each one returns to the station carrying the consequences of earlier choices, and the show is at its best when those consequences are allowed to matter. The lower entries are often valuable for the stability they bring, but they rarely drive the story in the same way.

Buck wins the top spot because his arc has the most sustained development. Eddie comes close, and his season 5 exit and return remain some of the most affecting storytelling in the series. The difference is range. Buck appears in nearly every season of the show's central conflict, and Stark makes each stage of his growth feel connected to the one before. Eddie is the stronger single arc, but Buck is the stronger character across the whole run.

Your ranking may look different. Some viewers will put Athena ahead of everyone for her performances, and others will argue for Maddie because of how the show handles her recovery. Tell us your favourite character, or share the ranking you would make, and say why. The best arguments usually come from people who have watched the episodes twice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is the best character in 9-1-1?

Buck, played by Oliver Stark, is the strongest pick on this list because his arc runs across most of the series and keeps changing. Eddie Diaz is a close second, especially for viewers who prefer one intensely emotional storyline. The answer depends on whether you value sustained growth or a single powerful arc.

Is Buck or Eddie the better 9-1-1 character?

Buck ranks above Eddie here because he is present for more of the show's major turning points and because his development is more consistent over time. Eddie has the more concentrated emotional arc, particularly around his season 5 departure and return. Both are central, and the comparison is close.

Who plays Eddie Diaz in 9-1-1?

Eddie Diaz is played by Ryan Guzman. He is a main character from season 2 onward, and he is the father of Christopher Diaz. Guzman's performance is strongest in quieter scenes where Eddie's guilt and love are visible without much dialogue.

Who plays Athena Grant in 9-1-1?

Athena Grant is played by Angela Bassett, who appears from the pilot onward. Athena is an LAPD sergeant who later moves into detective work in season 9. Bassett's performance is one of the most consistent strengths of the show.

Did Bobby Nash die in 9-1-1?

Yes. Bobby Nash, played by Peter Krause, dies in season 8, in the episode "Lab Rats," after giving his vaccine vial to a firefighter. His death is one of the most significant losses in the series and changes the balance of leadership at Station 118.

Who plays Christopher Diaz in 9-1-1?

Christopher Diaz is played by Gavin McHugh. Christopher first appears in season 2 and is born with cerebral palsy. His storylines focus on family care, and Buck becomes his legal guardian in season 4.

Who plays Karen Wilson in 9-1-1?

Karen Wilson is played by Tracie Thoms. Her first credited appearance noted here is a guest role in season 4, episode 7, and she is married to Hen Wilson. Karen is an aerospace engineer, and she and Hen adopt Denny and foster Mara.

Is Maddie Buckley's married name Han in 9-1-1?

Yes. Maddie, played by Jennifer Love Hewitt, marries Howard "Chimney" Han in season 7, and the character is credited as Maddie Han in some listings. Her birth surname, Buckley, is the name she is introduced under in season 2.

Which 9-1-1 characters work at Station 118?

Station 118 is home to Buck, Eddie, Chimney, Hen and Bobby Nash, along with other firefighters across the series. Buck, Eddie and Chimney are firefighters, while Bobby is the captain and Hen is a firefighter and paramedic. The station is the show's main setting for its firehouse storylines.

Where should a new viewer start with the 9-1-1 characters?

Start with the pilot, where Athena Grant and the Station 118 crew are introduced, and then follow Buck's early seasons. Once you know the core group, Eddie's introduction in season 2 is a natural next step. The character arcs build on each other, so watching in order gives the strongest payoff.

Episode of the Week

That Love Podcast presents: American Bollywood — Episode 5

Format/Genre: A hilarious and heartfelt coming-of-age audio rom-com about first love, fake dating, friendship, secret crushes and discovering that sometimes the people who truly see you have been watching all along.

Logline: With only hours to find a fake boyfriend for her double date with Miles Pires Shah, Izzy Lopez turns to Selina for help — and what begins as a ridiculous school-wide search unexpectedly reveals just how many people have been quietly noticing Izzy for years.

Izzy Lopez has created a boyfriend who does not exist, Miles Pires Shah expects to meet him that evening, and Selina has decided there is only one reasonable solution: find a real boy willing to play the part. Her search leads to Mason Ramos and Jake Geller, two book-loving classmates who reveal that they have both secretly liked Izzy for years and are remarkably enthusiastic about competing for the position.

Selina transforms an empty classroom into a bizarre game show where Mason and Jake must prove who knows Izzy best. What begins as a ridiculous competition quickly becomes increasingly unsettling as both boys demonstrate an astonishing knowledge of Izzy’s favourite books, movies, habits and embarrassing secrets — leaving Izzy to discover that she may not have been nearly as invisible as she always believed.

The questions become more personal until Selina asks something neither boy can answer with simple facts: what has Izzy wanted to feel more than anything since she was fourteen? Mason’s answer cuts through Izzy’s jokes and books and gets frighteningly close to the truth — she wants to know that she is enough exactly as she is, without having to perform or transform herself for somebody else.

With the double date getting closer and Miles waiting to meet a boyfriend who was invented less than a day earlier, Izzy finally has someone willing to step into the role. But the line between pretending and genuinely caring may already be much messier than she expected, especially when her chosen fake boyfriend has feelings that are anything but fake.

American Bollywood Episode 5 delivers romantic comedy, fake-dating chaos and surprising emotional depth as Izzy’s plan to make Miles finally see her raises an uncomfortable new question: what happens when someone else already does?
