10 Supernatural Shows Perfect for Snowy Winter Nights

20 min read

Snowy nights are made for a show that feels warm inside and cold outside. You want romance, candlelight and a supernatural story that makes the quiet streets feel a little more magical. The right series turns a winter evening into something you remember.

This list gives you ten supernatural shows with a moody, romantic feel. Each pick has a clear premise, a central conflict that keeps the story moving and a reason it suits a snowy night. Nothing here is chosen just for its scares.

The Vampire Diaries opens the countdown with its love triangle and dramatic pull, while Wednesday and The Haunting of Hill House bring gothic atmosphere. The list then moves through witch romances, ghost-hunting teams and a school story with a playful edge.

Each entry explains the premise, the central mood and stakes, and why the show earned its place. We also look at what fans and critics value, who will enjoy it most and where to find it, so you can plan your viewing with confidence.

Snowy-night viewing works best when you give the show time to build. Many of these series are slow to reveal their secrets, and the romance often grows in the quiet scenes between the big moments.

Some titles are long, comforting runs, while others are shorter stories that finish in a few evenings. Pick a longer series if you want a world to settle into over the season, or a short one if you want a complete arc.

Streaming catalogues change often, and romantic supernatural shows move between platforms and regions. Check your local service before you start, and treat the platform notes in each entry as a guide rather than a guarantee.

The list balances famous favourites with a few titles that are easier to miss. If you have already watched the big names, the lower entries are a good place to find a story that fits your snowy evenings.

Whether you are planning a quiet night in or a full weekend of snow and shadows, there is plenty here to keep you warm. Let’s start 👇

1. The Vampire Diaries

Release date: 2009 to 2017 | The CW | Supernatural romance drama, eight seasons

The Vampire Diaries follows Elena Gilbert, a high-school student in the small town of Mystic Falls, Virginia, whose life changes when she meets Stefan Salvatore, a brooding vampire who is hiding a century of dark history. Their romance is intense and dangerous, and it quickly draws her into a world she never knew existed. Elena discovers that the town hides vampires, werewolves, witches and hunters, all bound together by old feuds and ancient bargains. Just as she begins to trust Stefan, she is drawn to his older brother Damon, a charming and reckless vampire whose past is even darker than his brother’s. The love triangle that follows is the emotional engine of the series, but it is never simply a romance. Elena’s friends, including Bonnie and Matt, become entangled in the supernatural conflicts, and the town’s most powerful families each want something from the newcomers. Elena is also the doppelgänger of a vampire’s lost love, which makes her a target for enemies who want to use her bloodline for their own ends. The show balances high-school drama with gothic horror, and its mythology grows more complicated with each season. Mystic Falls becomes a place where loyalty, grief and desire are constantly tested, and every decision Elena makes has consequences that ripple through the entire community. Over eight seasons, the show repeatedly returns to the question of whether Elena can protect the people she loves without losing herself. The brothers’ rivalry becomes a central thread of every season.

The central conflict is Elena’s love triangle, set against a town full of vampires, witches and hunters who want a share of its power. The stakes include her family, her friends and the survival of everyone caught in the supernatural feud, which keeps escalating across the run.

The series is romantic, dramatic and full of twists. Its blend of love story and mythology keeps the tension high across eight seasons.

Why it ranks here: This show ranks first because its love triangle and dramatic pull give it a warm, dangerous glow.

Why fans and critics value it: Fans value the chemistry and the tense, romantic build across eight seasons.

Who should watch: Viewers who enjoy vampire romance, love triangles and long supernatural series.

Where to watch: The CW. Check availability in your region and confirm season details before you watch.

2. Wednesday

Release date: 2022 onward | Netflix | Supernatural teen mystery

Wednesday follows Wednesday Addams, the deadpan daughter of the Addams family, who is sent to Nevermore Academy, a boarding school for outcasts with its own strange traditions. Wednesday is unimpressed by her new classmates and dismissive of the staff, but she quickly finds herself caught up in a series of murders that the school’s adults seem keen to ignore. The victims are connected to a long-standing rivalry between the school’s students and the town around it, and the investigation pulls Wednesday deeper into a conflict that threatens everything she cares about. She also has an unusual gift: the ability to see visions of the past and future, which she struggles to control and understand. Her roommate Enid is cheerful and eager to make friends, and the two girls form an unlikely bond as they navigate the school’s rules, rivalries and secrets. Wednesday’s determination to solve the mystery on her own terms makes her a difficult partner, and her refusal to follow convention often puts her at odds with the people who want to help her. The show balances gothic horror and sharp comedy, with a darkly playful tone that gives its supernatural mystery a memorable voice. Every new clue Wednesday uncovers raises the stakes, and the question of who is behind the killings becomes increasingly personal. Her family’s history with the town becomes part of the story, and her own past begins to surface in unexpected ways. Each new episode brings a fresh clue and a new suspect, and no one at the school can be fully trusted.

The central conflict is Wednesday’s determination to solve the mystery on her own terms, while the school’s rules, her rivals and her own visions push back. The stakes include her safety, the safety of her friends and the truth about the town’s history.

The series is witty, gothic and stylish. Its darkly comic tone and strong lead performance give it a memorable voice.

Why it ranks here: This show ranks second because its gothic mood and deadpan romance threads make it a striking choice for a snowy night.

Where to watch: Netflix. Check availability in your region before you watch.

3. The Haunting of Hill House

Release date: 2018 | Netflix | Gothic horror, one season

The Haunting of Hill House is based on Shirley Jackson’s 1959 novel and follows the Crain family, who spent their childhood in a sprawling mansion that their father bought in the hope of restoring and selling it. The house was never a happy place. Strange sounds, shadows that seemed to move on their own and a sense that something was watching the children left a mark on each of them, and the family fled one night after a tragedy that changed everything. Years later the five siblings are adults living apart, each carrying a different version of what happened. One has built a career writing about ghosts, another runs a funeral home, one works as a therapist with a gift for sensing other people’s pain, one has struggled with addiction, and the youngest died in circumstances that were never fully explained. When the family is pulled back together, they must return to the house and confront the memories they have buried. The series moves between two timelines, childhood and the present, so viewers gradually piece together what really happened in each room and why the house still holds its grip on the people who escaped it. The premise is less about jump scares than about grief, guilt and the stories families tell themselves to survive, and the house becomes a mirror for the damage each sibling has carried into adulthood. Each sibling reads the house through the lens of their own experience, so the same event looks different depending on who is remembering it.

The central conflict is the siblings’ attempt to make sense of their childhood while the house continues to draw them back. The stakes include their relationships, their sanity and the secrets the house has kept, and the family slowly confronts what each of them has hidden.

The series is atmospheric, emotional and deeply unsettling. Its gothic setting and layered family story give it a powerful pull.

Why it ranks here: This show ranks third because its slow-building dread and haunted family house make it one of the most unsettling picks.

Why fans and critics value it: Fans value its atmosphere, its emotional storytelling and its patient, unsettling tone.

Who should watch: Viewers who enjoy slow-burn horror, gothic houses and family mysteries.

Where to watch: Netflix. The series ran for one season. Check availability in your region before you watch.

4. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

Release date: 2018 to 2020 | Netflix | Gothic horror teen drama, four seasons

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina follows Sabrina Spellman, a half-witch and half-mortal teenager who lives in the town of Greendale with her aunts, her cousin and her mortal friends. Sabrina must choose between her life as a normal teenager and the dark witchcraft of her family, which requires her to sign the Dark Lord’s book and devote herself to the coven. Her choice is not simple, because the town is full of secrets that connect to her family’s history and to the powers she is only beginning to understand. Sabrina’s aunts, Hilda and Zelda, want her to embrace the family’s craft, while her friends and her mortal boyfriend Harvey want her to stay grounded in the everyday world. The show takes the witch story seriously while poking fun at its clichés, and its tone shifts between teen drama, gothic horror and sharp satire. As Sabrina learns more about the people in Greendale, she realises that every choice she makes affects the balance between light and darkness in her community. The series is gothic and stylish, with a memorable cast of supporting characters and a plot that keeps the supernatural threat close to home. Her battle is both external and internal, and the stakes grow as her loyalties are tested again and again. Sabrina also faces the expectations of the coven, which pressures her to take on a role she has never wanted. Her relationship with Harvey is tested as she keeps her dual life secret from him.

The central conflict is Sabrina’s battle between light and darkness, as her family and her friends pull her in opposite directions. The stakes include her soul, her loved ones and the balance of a town full of secrets, and every decision carries a cost.

Why it ranks here: This show ranks fourth because its gothic romance and witchy atmosphere suit a snowy winter binge.

Why fans and critics value it: Fans value its gothic look, sharp dialogue and bold tone.

Who should watch: Viewers who enjoy gothic horror, witch stories and darker teen fantasy.

5. A Discovery of Witches

Release date: 2018 to 2022 | Sky One and AMC | Gothic romance and mystery, three seasons

A Discovery of Witches is based on Deborah Harkness’s novels and follows Diana Bishop, a historian and a witch who has deliberately avoided using her powers for most of her life. Diana works at Oxford’s Bodleian Library, where she requests an ancient alchemical manuscript, Ashmole 782, that has been lost for centuries. The request draws the attention of many supernatural factions, including vampires, witches and daemons, who all want the book for their own reasons. Diana’s discovery sets off a chain of events that forces her into a world she has tried to ignore, and she soon finds herself under the protection of Matthew Clairmont, a vampire scientist with a long and secretive past. Their relationship begins with suspicion and grows into a deep and complicated bond, as they search for the manuscript and its hidden secrets. The story moves between Oxford, the Bodleian and the wider world of the supernatural, and it gives equal weight to scholarship, romance and danger. Diana must decide how much of her identity she is willing to reveal, and whether she can trust the people who claim to protect her. The series is romantic, scholarly and gothic, with rich period detail and a strong sense of history. Every clue Diana uncovers brings her closer to the truth about the manuscript and the powers that want it. Her academic world and her hidden magical world slowly collide, and she has to find a way to keep both alive. Each new discovery also raises the risk that she will be exposed.

Lucy Carlyle, a teenager with a rare ability to sense ghosts, joins a small agency run by three young people who are determined to prove that they can do the job better than the adults. The agency is led by Anthony Lockwood, a charismatic and fearless hunter, and includes George Cubbins, a brilliant researcher with a talent for gadgets. Lucy’s gift makes her essential to the team, and their cases quickly take them into dangerous hauntings that the official agencies have failed to resolve. 7. The Originals

Release date: 2013 to 2018 | The CW | Supernatural drama, five seasons

The Originals is a spin-off of The Vampire Diaries and follows the Mikaelson family, the oldest and most powerful vampires in the world. Klaus, Elijah, Rebekah and their allies have made New Orleans their home, building a supernatural empire in the city’s French Quarter. Their rule is challenged by old enemies and new threats, including witches who hold grudges, rival vampire families and forces that want the Mikaelsons’ bloodline for themselves. The family’s bonds are tested by their long and complicated history, which includes betrayal, love and centuries of violence. Klaus, the most feared of the siblings, is trying to protect his family and his city while also confronting his own past. Elijah is more controlled and principled, often serving as the family’s moral compass, while Rebekah balances her loyalty with her desire for independence. The series blends gothic romance with political intrigue, and its vampire mythology is one of the most detailed in the genre. New Orleans provides a rich backdrop of music, history and danger, and the city’s own supernatural communities are drawn into the family’s conflicts. Every alliance is temporary and every betrayal has consequences, which keeps the stakes high across the series. The Mikaelsons must decide whether to protect the city they love or to take what they want, and the choices they make shape the future of everyone around them. The family’s power struggles play out in the city’s streets, bars and ancient houses. Each member wants to prove that they can lead the family.

Why fans and critics value it: Fans value the chemistry and the cost of loving someone you cannot trust.

Who should watch: Viewers who enjoy vampire dramas and complex family stories.

8. Stranger Things

Release date: 2016 to 2025 | Netflix | Sci-fi horror mystery, five seasons

Stranger Things is set in Hawkins, Indiana, in the 1980s. When a boy named Will Byers disappears, his friends, his mother and the town’s police chief uncover a web of secrets beneath the community, including a girl with extraordinary powers who was raised in a secret government facility. The town’s quiet streets hide a dangerous alternate dimension known as the Upside Down, where monsters move through the shadows and threaten to break into the real world. Will’s friends, Mike, Dustin, Lucas and Max, refuse to give up the search and find themselves drawn into a conflict with government agents who want to control the girl and her powers. Their investigation brings them into contact with Joyce Byers, Will’s mother, who is convinced her son is still alive and is willing to face the unknown to find him. The series combines nostalgic 1980s references with tense creature-feature thrills, and its young ensemble gives the story a warmth that balances the horror. Every discovery exposes more of the government’s experiments and the price paid by the people involved. The stakes include the lives of the children, the safety of the whole town and the question of whether the monsters can ever be stopped. Hawkins becomes a place where ordinary life and extraordinary danger exist side by side. Each new discovery leaves the group with more questions than answers. The town’s adults are slow to believe them, which makes their search harder. Their friendships grow stronger as the danger closes in.

The series brings together Sir Malcolm Murray, a grieving explorer searching for his missing daughter, Vanessa Ives, a young woman with a dark gift and a troubled past, and Ethan Chandler, an American gunslinger with his own secrets. Their paths cross as they investigate a series of disturbing events that link them to the city’s occult underworld. The group soon discovers that their fates are tied to a powerful evil that threatens London and the souls of the people they love. The series draws on figures from Victorian horror literature, including Dorian Gray and the creature of Frankenstein, creating a world where familiar stories are reshaped into something new. Each character carries a dark past, and their confrontations with the forces that hunt them reveal the cost of their secrets. The show’s lush period detail, moody atmosphere and literary tone give it a cinematic feel that stands out among supernatural dramas. As the danger grows, the group must decide whom they can trust and how far they are willing to go to save the city. 10. School Spirits

Release date: 2023 onward | Platform varies by region | Supernatural school drama

School Spirits follows a teenager who is drawn into the lives of the ghosts haunting her school after she begins to see and speak with them. The school has a long and unsettling history, with secrets buried in its halls and classrooms, and the spirits who remain there are trapped by unfinished business. The heroine is struggling to adjust after a painful loss, which makes her especially vulnerable to the strange connection she feels with the dead. As she begins to help the ghosts resolve their unfinished business, she uncovers stories that reveal the darker side of the school’s past. The show balances teen drama with supernatural mystery, and its ghosts are as complicated and flawed as the living students around them. Her friendships are tested as she spends more time with the spirits, and her relationship with the living becomes harder to maintain. The school setting feels both familiar and strange, with corridors, lockers and classrooms that hold memories of decades of students. Each ghost’s story is a small mystery, and the connections between them reveal the larger truth about the school. Helping the dead comes at a cost, and the stakes grow as she realises that some secrets are better left buried. Her closest friend notices the changes in her behaviour and begins to worry about her. Episode of the Week

That Love Podcast presents: American Bollywood — Episode 5

Format/Genre: A hilarious and heartfelt coming-of-age audio rom-com about first love, fake dating, friendship, secret crushes and discovering that sometimes the people who truly see you have been watching all along.

Logline: With only hours to find a fake boyfriend for her double date with Miles Pires Shah, Izzy Lopez turns to Selina for help — and what begins as a ridiculous school-wide search unexpectedly reveals just how many people have been quietly noticing Izzy for years.

Izzy Lopez has created a boyfriend who does not exist, Miles Pires Shah expects to meet him that evening, and Selina has decided there is only one reasonable solution: find a real boy willing to play the part. Her search leads to Mason Ramos and Jake Geller, two book-loving classmates who reveal that they have both secretly liked Izzy for years and are remarkably enthusiastic about competing for the position.

Selina transforms an empty classroom into a bizarre game show where Mason and Jake must prove who knows Izzy best. What begins as a ridiculous competition quickly becomes increasingly unsettling as both boys demonstrate an astonishing knowledge of Izzy’s favourite books, movies, habits and embarrassing secrets — leaving Izzy to discover that she may not have been nearly as invisible as she always believed.

The questions become more personal until Selina asks something neither boy can answer with simple facts: what has Izzy wanted to feel more than anything since she was fourteen? Mason’s answer cuts through Izzy’s jokes and books and gets frighteningly close to the truth — she wants to know that she is enough exactly as she is, without having to perform or transform herself for somebody else.

With the double date getting closer and Miles waiting to meet a boyfriend who was invented less than a day earlier, Izzy finally has someone willing to step into the role. But the line between pretending and genuinely caring may already be much messier than she expected, especially when her chosen fake boyfriend has feelings that are anything but fake.

American Bollywood Episode 5 delivers romantic comedy, fake-dating chaos and surprising emotional depth as Izzy’s plan to make Miles finally see her raises an uncomfortable new question: what happens when someone else already does?
