With Spider-Man: Brand New Day now out and the dust settling on Tom Holland's live-action corner of the multiverse, attention swings back to the other Spider-Man story that's been left hanging for years: Miles Morales' animated trilogy finale. Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is officially the next Spider-Man movie on the calendar, locked in for June 18, 2027, and after a genuinely turbulent road to get here, there's finally a real sense of momentum behind it.

A Release Date That's Been Anything But Simple

If it feels like Beyond the Spider-Verse has been "almost here" for years, that's because it has. The film was originally conceived as a direct continuation shot back-to-back with Across the Spider-Verse, with an initial release date of March 29, 2024 — less than a year after its predecessor. Then the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes hit, halting voice recording and pushing animation timelines back significantly. From there, the date bounced around repeatedly: June 4, 2027, then pushed to June 25, 2027 to catch more schools on summer break, then pulled back up a week to June 18, 2027 to land on Father's Day weekend (and Juneteenth). That June 18, 2027 date is now the one that's stuck, setting up a direct box office collision with Pixar's Gatto on opening weekend.

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the creative engine behind the franchise since Into the Spider-Verse, have been candid about how much work remained. As of early 2026, Lord described the production as "deep, deep in it," with the team reviewing footage at IMAX headquarters to make sure the film's visuals hold up at full scale — notably, this will be the first Spider-Verse film built from the ground up for IMAX, rather than remastered for it after the fact.

Picking Up Exactly Where the Cliffhanger Left Off

Across the Spider-Verse ended on one of the more audacious cliffhangers in recent blockbuster history: Miles Morales, trying to save his own father from a scripted "canon event" death, accidentally leaps into the wrong universe entirely — Earth-42, a bleak reality where he never became Spider-Man at all. Instead, that world's Miles grew up to become the villainous Prowler, and the film ends with our Miles tied up in Prowler's apartment, being interrogated by an alternate Uncle Aaron.

Miles Morales Spider-Man leaps over a skyline above two characters touching foreheads; text reads Beyond the Spider-Verse so far.

Early CinemaCon footage confirms Beyond the Spider-Verse picks up immediately from that moment. Miles breaks free using one of his signature electric venom blasts, trading blows with his evil variant in a sequence clearly designed to set up a much larger rivalry between the two Miles Moraleses across the film. From there, the story is expected to follow Miles escaping Earth-42 and reuniting with Spider-Gwen's growing resistance movement — a splinter group pushing back against Miguel O'Hara and the Spider-Society's increasingly authoritarian grip on the multiverse.

At the emotional center of it all is still Jefferson Davis. Miles' entire arc across the trilogy has been built around refusing to accept that his father's death is a fixed, unchangeable "canon event," and Beyond is expected to finally resolve whether Miles can save Jeff without unraveling the multiverse the way Miguel keeps warning him it will.

The Returning (and Expanding) Cast

The voice cast reads like a reunion of nearly every Spider-Person introduced across the first two films:

  • Shameik Moore returns as Miles Morales

  • Hailee Steinfeld returns as Gwen Stacy / Spider-Gwen

  • Oscar Isaac as Miguel O'Hara / Spider-Man 2099

  • Jake Johnson as Peter B. Parker

  • Daniel Kaluuya as Hobie Brown / Spider-Punk

  • Jason Schwartzman returning as The Spot, whose transformation from a bumbling C-list villain into a genuinely cosmic-scale threat has been one of the trilogy's sneakier long-cons

  • Karan Soni as Pavitr Prabhakar

  • Jharrel Jerome returning as Miles G. Morales, the Earth-42 Prowler

  • Nicolas Cage (Spider-Man Noir), John Mulaney (Spider-Ham), Issa Rae (Spider-Woman), Amandla Stenberg (Spider-Byte), and Greta Lee, among others confirmed or expected to return

Lord and Miller have described this as "the final chapter of Miles' story," and have gone as far as invoking The Empire Strikes Back as a tonal reference point for co-director Joaquim Dos Santos — a framing that suggests darker stakes and a less tidy ending than audiences might expect from an animated franchise finale.

Why This Matters Beyond Just Miles' Story

It's worth remembering how much cultural weight this trilogy is carrying at this point. Into the Spider-Verse won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and fundamentally changed what mainstream animation could look like. Across the Spider-Verse built on that with a $690 million global gross and an ending so unresolved it left fans waiting four years for closure. Beyond the Spider-Verse isn't just concluding Miles' arc — it's closing out one of the most influential animated trilogies of the last decade, and doing so while the live-action side of Spider-Man cinema (Tom Holland's corner) is dealing with its own identity questions post-Brand New Day.

Final Thoughts

Whether Beyond the Spider-Verse sticks the landing after this many delays remains the billion-dollar question. But with a release date that finally appears locked, a cast fully back in place, and a filmmaking team openly comparing this chapter to genre-defining sequels, expectations are about as high as they've ever been for a Spider-Man movie — animated or otherwise.
