10 Best Superman Movies and TV Shows Ranked

19 min read

Looking for the best Superman movies and TV shows means choosing between very different versions of the same hero. One is a bright, almost mythic champion in a red cape; another is a lonely young man trying to understand where he came from; another is a father balancing family dinners with the knowledge that the world may need him at any moment. The strongest Superman stories make all of those ideas feel connected.

This countdown ranks ten standout Superman screen stories, from feature films and animated series to long-running live-action television. It keeps your supplied order intact: the countdown begins with your No. 10 and works toward Superman: The Movie at No. 1. We weigh storytelling, character work, performances, visual identity, emotional payoff, cultural influence and how clearly each title understands Clark Kent as well as the symbol he becomes.

That distinction matters. Superman is not compelling simply because he can fly or stop a train. The tension comes from a powerful person who chooses patience, responsibility and kindness, even when anger or fear would be easier. Some entries here are more spectacular, some are more intimate, and a few are uneven; each earns its place by offering a memorable answer to the question of what Superman means.

These recommendations also work for different moods. Choose a complete cinematic origin, a family drama with four seasons of history, a witty animated introduction, or a superhero ensemble where Superman shares the screen. Streaming services change by country and month, so the UK notes below direct you to current listings rather than promising that a platform will always carry a title. If you are revisiting the character or meeting him for the first time, there is a good starting point here. Let’s get into it 👇

A quick guide to this ranking

A quick guide to this ranking

The list is about screen stories featuring Superman, not every appearance in the larger DC universe. An ensemble title can rank when Superman has a meaningful role, but a title does not get a free pass just for including a cape. We look for a clear story, a convincing Clark Kent and a reason the version remains worth watching.

What makes a Superman story work?

The best adaptations balance scale with intimacy. A city-saving crisis gives the hero something physical to do; Lois, the Kents, Jimmy and other allies make the choice personal. We also value tone. Superman can be earnest without being naïve, funny without becoming a joke and powerful without making every problem feel trivial.

A note on UK viewing

Availability is not fixed. JustWatch’s UK listings provide a current snapshot for films and shows, while its live-action Superman guide is a useful starting point for theatrical releases. Check the listing on the day you plan to watch because subscriptions, rental windows and digital-purchase options move around.

10. Zack Snyder’s Justice League

Superman with the Justice League ensemble in Zack Snyder’s Justice League

Zack Snyder’s Justice League begins after Superman’s death. Batman and Wonder Woman realise Earth is exposed, then bring together Aquaman, Cyborg, the Flash and a returning Superman. Their enemy Steppenwolf seeks three ancient Mother Boxes, and the threat points toward Darkseid and a larger invasion. The story is about a team learning to trust one another, but Superman’s absence shapes every decision. Bringing him back may give the League its strongest defender; it also raises the question of whether the man who returns will recognise the people trying to save him.

The four-hour cut gives the ensemble room to breathe. Cyborg receives a fuller emotional journey, the Flash’s speed becomes a storytelling tool, and the heroes’ separate lives connect to the central danger. Henry Cavill’s Superman arrives late, but his presence changes the mood of every scene. His return is less interesting as a power upgrade than as a reminder that the League is fighting for a world that still needs hope.

Its length is a genuine barrier, and some visual choices divide viewers. It ranks tenth because Superman matters but is not the lead, while other entries tell a more focused story about Clark himself. Still, it sits above many team films for its scale and for giving his return emotional weight. Watch it if you enjoy extended director’s cuts, team dynamics and the darker DCEU continuity. UK viewing: check the current JustWatch listing because subscription and rental options change.

The film also works as a test of what an ensemble can do with a missing central hero. Each member of the League responds to the vacuum differently: Batman turns guilt into recruitment, Wonder Woman becomes a guide, and the younger heroes discover how much they can contribute. Superman’s eventual return therefore completes a team arc rather than simply delivering a larger fight. That is why the cut is a worthwhile long-form experience even though it is not the most complete Superman portrait here.

9. Superman Returns

Superman Returns.jpg, illustrating 9. Superman Returns in 10 Best Superman Movies and TV Shows Ranked.

Bryan Singer’s 2006 film finds Brandon Routh’s Clark Kent returning to Earth after years away. The world has carried on without him, and Lois Lane has built a life with another partner and a young son. Lex Luthor has escaped prison and is pursuing a scheme that uses Kryptonian technology to reshape the planet. Superman must face a public that has learned to manage without him while deciding whether he can still belong in Lois’s life. The tension is quieter than a standard origin story: Clark is not asking who he is for the first time, but whether there is a place for him after absence.

Routh gives the role a gentle, wistful quality that recalls Christopher Reeve without simply imitating him. The film is most distinctive when it treats Superman as a figure people have missed: the rescue sequences turn his return into a public event, while the conversations with Lois carry the ache of a relationship that has moved on. The plane rescue is a showcase for the character’s power and for the film’s sincere admiration of him.

Its slow pace and reliance on earlier films keep it outside the top tier, and its central romantic conflict can feel more melancholy than adventurous. It earns ninth place because the performance and several set pieces make it more affecting than its reputation suggests, while its limited reinvention leaves it behind the entries above. Choose it for a reflective continuation of the Reeve-era mythology rather than a fast action film. UK viewing options change; consult the current live-action Superman guide.

The movie is best approached as an elegy for a familiar version of the hero, not as a clean reboot. That choice gives it emotional texture, especially when Clark observes that Lois has built a different life, but it also means new viewers may feel the story assumes a connection to earlier films. Its strongest scenes communicate how lonely a returning hero can be when everyone has found a way to live without him. That distinctive mood gives it a clear place in the countdown.

8. Smallville

Smallville.jpg, illustrating 8. Smallville in 10 Best Superman Movies and TV Shows Ranked.

Smallville follows Clark Kent from his teenage years in Kansas through the long process of becoming Superman. A meteor shower brings an infant from Krypton to Earth and leaves the town changed. Years later, Clark is learning what his abilities can do, protecting his secret and working out how his feelings for Lana Lang fit beside his friendship with Lex Luthor. The early seasons use a weekly mystery structure, often involving people affected by meteor rocks, while the larger story tracks Clark’s relationships with his parents, Lois Lane, the Daily Planet and his Kryptonian history.

Tom Welling makes Clark’s uncertainty central. This is a hero who can already perform extraordinary rescues but has not accepted the public role that comes with them. The series explores identity as a gradual choice rather than a suit reveal. Kent family scenes ground the larger mythology, and Michael Rosenbaum’s Lex gives Clark’s friendship a complicated, sometimes tragic energy. The show also makes time for school, work, loyalty and jealousy—the ordinary details that can get lost when a superhero story races toward another catastrophe.

Ten seasons mean inconsistency, and the early meteor-freak formula can become repetitive. Smallville ranks eighth because its best character arcs are memorable, but the complete run is less tightly shaped than the stronger entries. It suits viewers who want a long coming-of-age saga and a slow build toward the Superman myth. UK rights for older series rotate, so check current streaming and digital-store listings before starting.

Its greatest strength is accumulated history. Relationships that begin in adolescence gain new meaning as Clark grows into his abilities, and the series can let a friendship, rivalry or family disagreement breathe across many episodes. That scale also creates its weakness: some plotlines stretch longer than their ideas can support. The trade-off is worthwhile if you like character continuity and do not mind a show that takes its time reaching the familiar public identity.

7. My Adventures with Superman

Clark, Lois and the young Daily Planet team in My Adventures with Superman

My Adventures with Superman opens with Clark Kent starting at the Daily Planet alongside Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen. Clark is learning to use his powers in public without exposing his identity, Lois is determined to prove herself as a reporter, and Jimmy wants to make the newsroom’s work matter. Their investigations lead toward mysterious technology and threats connected to Clark’s unknown Kryptonian past. The series frames Superman’s origin as both an action-adventure and a young-adult story about three friends discovering what they want to become.

The animation uses bright colour, expressive movement and anime-influenced action to make Superman feel quick and playful. Jack Quaid gives Clark a warm awkwardness, and the romance with Lois grows from shared work rather than from a pre-existing legend. Jimmy is not just a sidekick; he has his own ambitions and comedy beats. Clark’s secrecy is treated as a relationship problem, so near-misses and revelations matter to the team.

It lands at seventh because its energy and chemistry are excellent, but the early seasons are still building a mythology that the most complete classics already possess. That is a promising limitation, not a reason to skip it. Start here if you want an accessible modern Superman cartoon with humour, action and an affectionate Lois-and-Clark dynamic. Check current UK streaming or broadcaster listings for availability.

The series is especially good at making its heroes feel young without reducing them to stereotypes. Clark’s earnestness, Lois’s ambition and Jimmy’s confidence create three distinct ways of entering adulthood, and each friend pushes the others to be braver. The result is a Superman story with a lighter rhythm and a genuine sense of discovery. It is an easy recommendation for viewers who want a new take rather than a direct remake of the Reeve films.

6. Superman: The Animated Series

Superman The Animated Series.webp, illustrating 6. Superman: The Animated Series in 10 Best Superman Movies and TV Shows Ranked.

Superman: The Animated Series presents Clark Kent as a young reporter in Metropolis who hides an extraordinary life behind an ordinary one. It follows him through dangers ranging from Lex Luthor’s corporate schemes to alien invasions, technological threats and powerful figures across the DC universe. Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen are central to the Daily Planet stories, while the Kents and Clark’s Kryptonian past provide his personal centre. Episodes usually offer a self-contained challenge, but recurring characters gradually build a larger picture of the city and its people.

The show’s clean designs and carefully controlled action remain effective. Superman feels physically powerful without becoming cruel, and the voice cast makes familiar characters distinct. Clark’s reporting matters: he is not merely changing clothes between rescues, but asking questions and finding out what the powerful would prefer to hide. Lex is particularly strong because his public respectability makes the rivalry feel like a fight over what society should admire.

It ranks sixth because it is one of the most dependable interpretations, though its episodic format can make the emotional line feel less continuous than the best live-action dramas. This is an ideal choice for families, animation fans and viewers who want a principled Superman without a heavy continuity checklist. UK availability for older animation varies by service; check the current catalogue before planning a full watch.

The series also gives supporting characters real jobs in the story. Lois’s investigative instincts create trouble and move plots forward; Jimmy’s enthusiasm places him close to danger; and the Kents remind Clark that his moral choices began at home. This grounded cast makes the world feel larger than a series of superpowered confrontations. It remains one of the strongest first stops for someone who wants classic Superman storytelling in concise episodes.

5. Justice League Unlimited

Justice League Unlimited.jpg, illustrating 5. Justice League Unlimited in 10 Best Superman Movies and TV Shows Ranked.

Justice League Unlimited expands the earlier animated Justice League into a much larger team and a broader set of stories. Superman remains a central figure, but the series gives room to Green Arrow, Supergirl, the Question and many others. The team responds to threats that no single hero can handle, while political suspicion grows around the League’s size and influence. Episodes shift between personal missions and conflicts with organisations such as Cadmus, asking whether a group with near-unlimited power can stay accountable to the people it protects.

That question makes this more than a parade of cameos. Superman’s reputation affects how allies, officials and ordinary people react to the team, and his strength is most interesting when the series tests his judgement. The expanded cast gives the world a lived-in quality, while short episodes move quickly between comedy, mystery and serious science-fiction ideas. Its DC universe feels coherent because consequences and relationships travel across stories.

It ranks fifth because its ambition and animated storytelling are remarkable, but it is an ensemble rather than a Superman-led series. Viewers who want Clark in every scene may prefer the solo shows above it. For anyone who enjoys a rich superhero universe, it is among the strongest animated continuities ever made. Availability for older Warner Bros. animation changes; check a current UK streaming search or digital store.

The format is also a useful way to understand Superman’s role in a community of heroes. He is powerful enough to dominate a battle, yet the series is most interesting when he listens, collaborates or has to defend a decision. That lets other characters challenge him without diminishing his stature. This balance of scale and accountability is the main reason the show earns a top-five place even without keeping Superman at the centre of every episode.

4. Man of Steel

Henry Cavill as Superman in Man of Steel

Man of Steel follows Clark Kent as a drifter moving through a world that does not know what he is. Flashbacks show Krypton’s destruction, his adoption by Martha and Jonathan Kent, and the difficult choices that come with powers he cannot explain. When General Zod arrives looking for the key to Krypton’s future, Clark must decide whether to remain hidden or reveal himself to a frightened population. Lois Lane’s investigation brings her into the same conflict, while the fate of two worlds becomes tied to Clark accepting his heritage.

Henry Cavill gives Clark a guarded, searching quality, and Zack Snyder builds action around movement and impact. The first-flight sequence makes Clark’s new freedom exhilarating; the scale also makes an alien invasion feel tangible. Amy Adams’s Lois is an active journalist who pursues the story rather than waiting to be rescued. The serious tone is a deliberate departure from the lighter Reeve films, and that contrast remains part of the debate around the movie.

It misses the top three because the destruction-heavy final act and sombre approach sometimes crowd out the warmth that defines Superman at his best. It still ranks fourth for its visual ambition, compelling origin and clear central conflict. Watch it if you like modern science-fiction superhero films, first-contact tension and a Clark who must choose what kind of public figure to become. UK streaming and rental options are listed on the current JustWatch page.

The story is most effective when it focuses on Clark’s choice to be seen. He has spent years learning that his abilities can frighten people, so public trust is not an automatic reward for saving lives. Lois’s reporting forces the question into the open, while Zod makes hiding impossible. The result is an origin built around responsibility under pressure. Viewers who prefer a warmer tone may rank the film lower, but its central decision gives the countdown a strong modern entry.

3. Superman II

Superman II.jpg, illustrating 3. Superman II in 10 Best Superman Movies and TV Shows Ranked.

Superman II continues the Reeve-era story as Clark’s relationship with Lois becomes more serious and three Kryptonian criminals escape the Phantom Zone. General Zod, Ursa and Non reach Earth with powers like Superman’s and a plan to rule it. Clark must decide how much of his life he is willing to give up for the possibility of an ordinary future with Lois. That personal choice becomes inseparable from the threat to Earth: if he steps away from being Superman, people will face enemies who have no interest in sharing power.

Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder give the romance a sharp, lived-in quality, and Terence Stamp’s Zod is a memorable counterpoint: commanding, contemptuous and perfectly suited to the film’s theatricality. The sequel mixes flirtation, fish-out-of-water humour and large-scale action. Its central idea—that a hero might wish for a private life—is simple but emotionally effective, testing whether love and responsibility can coexist.

It ranks third because the chemistry and villain performances are stronger than most superhero sequels, while production history and different versions leave the film somewhat uneven. The entries above are more complete portraits of Superman’s wider world, but few are as entertaining minute to minute. Choose it for classic superhero adventure and the clearest early screen test of Clark’s relationship with Lois. For current UK options, consult the live-action Superman guide.

The film understands that a romantic choice has consequences beyond the couple. Clark’s decision changes his capacity to protect everyone else, while Lois has to confront whether knowing his secret means she can share an ordinary life with him. That personal tension gives the Zod conflict a sharper edge. The film does not always land every tonal transition, yet its combination of adventure, comedy and romance is still a template many superhero stories struggle to match.

2. Superman & Lois

Superman & Lois.jpg, illustrating 2. Superman & Lois in 10 Best Superman Movies and TV Shows Ranked.

Superman & Lois begins after Clark and Lois have spent years balancing journalism, marriage and superhero emergencies. They return to Smallville with their teenage sons, Jonathan and Jordan, after a family loss and work changes force them to reconsider where they belong. Jordan begins showing unusual abilities, while the brothers respond differently to small-town life and to the truth about their father. Clark faces dangerous enemies, but the everyday engine is a family trying to speak honestly while keeping a secret that could make their sons targets.

Tyler Hoechlin’s Clark feels capable and approachable, and Elizabeth Tulloch’s Lois combines investigative drive with the exhaustion of someone managing several crises at once. The Kent boys have their own dilemmas, so the family is not just an accessory to Superman’s missions. The Smallville setting changes the scale: people know one another, and decisions have consequences after a fight is over. The strongest episodes are about trust, grief, parenting and being present for the people you love.

It takes second place because it offers the richest ongoing family portrait here, and its best character scenes make Superman feel human without shrinking his heroism. The top pick edges it out with a defining, self-contained origin and broader cultural impact; this is a close runner-up. Watch it for character-driven superhero television, a mature Lois-and-Clark relationship and family stakes. UK services currently listing the series can be checked through JustWatch.

A family drama also gives the show room to question what heroism costs at home. Clark cannot solve every problem by flying faster, and Lois’s work does not pause because the world has another emergency. Their sons need explanations, boundaries and trust rather than only protection. That pressure makes the show’s quiet conversations feel as important as its action. It is the best pick on this list for viewers who want Superman’s private life treated as seriously as his public one.

1. Superman: The Movie

Superman The Movie.jpg, illustrating 1. Superman: The Movie in 10 Best Superman Movies and TV Shows Ranked.

Richard Donner’s Superman: The Movie begins on Krypton, where Jor-El sends his infant son Kal-El away before the planet is destroyed. The child lands in Kansas and is raised by Martha and Jonathan Kent, who teach him to use his abilities with care. As an adult, Clark moves to Metropolis, works at the Daily Planet and meets Lois Lane while trying to understand his place in the world. When Lex Luthor launches a plan that threatens thousands, Clark must turn private gifts into public responsibility. The film gives viewers the full journey: lost home, chosen family, first love, rescues and the decision to become Superman.

Christopher Reeve makes Clark funny, shy and observant, then lets Superman’s confidence grow from the same humane character instead of replacing him with someone else. Margot Kidder’s Lois is curious and quick-witted, and Gene Hackman’s Lex brings theatrical confidence that suits the film’s adventure tone. It moves from Krypton’s monumental opening to newsroom comedy, romance and rescue spectacle without losing its emotional centre: the Kents give Clark a moral compass, while Metropolis gives him a community to serve.

This is No. 1 because it is the most complete and influential screen portrait in the countdown. It has the strongest origin arc, the clearest balance of spectacle and humour, and a lead performance that makes compassion as memorable as strength. Superman & Lois is a richer family drama, and Superman II is a livelier sequel, but neither combines discovery, romance, adventure and a lasting definition of the character in one film as successfully. Start here if you want the essential Superman movie. UK availability changes; check the JustWatch live-action film guide.

The achievement is not that every effect looks contemporary; it is that the film knows what the audience needs to believe. Clark’s early life gives his values a source, Lois gives him a human connection, and Luthor gives his powers a problem that cannot be solved by strength alone. Reeve’s double performance supplies the final bridge. Superman is confident, but Clark remains the person whose kindness made that confidence worthwhile. That integrated approach is exactly why this entry beats every other title here.

Before we reveal our No. 1 pick…

Conclusion

Superman has endured because every generation can find a different way into the same essential idea: power matters most when it is guided by care. The films and shows here approach that idea from several directions. Smallville makes the decision to become a hero a coming-of-age story; Superman & Lois asks how that responsibility fits inside marriage and parenting; the animated series turn the Daily Planet and Metropolis into a welcoming adventure world. Man of Steel and Zack Snyder’s Justice League scale the story up to alien conflict, while Superman Returns looks at what it means to come back after the world has changed.

The ranking’s top three are close for different reasons. Superman II has the most playful romantic adventure, and Superman & Lois gives Clark a fuller family life than any other entry. Superman: The Movie takes the top place because it makes the mythology legible in one film and gives it an emotional centre in the Kents, Lois and Reeve’s defining performance. If you are new to the character, start at No. 1; if you already know the origin, choose the tone you want tonight and let the cape take it from there.

10 Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best Superman movie to start with?

Superman: The Movie is the clearest starting point because it tells Clark’s origin, introduces Lois and Lex, and shows how his upbringing shapes his public choices. If you prefer a modern visual style, Man of Steel offers a contemporary origin; My Adventures with Superman is a breezier animated entry with humour and young-adult character dynamics.

Is Superman: The Movie still worth watching?

Yes. Its pace and effects belong to a different era, but Christopher Reeve’s performance remains warm and sharply defined. The film makes Clark’s shyness and Superman’s confidence feel like parts of the same person, which is why later adaptations echo its choices. It is worth watching for the origin, romance and influence on superhero cinema.

Which Superman show is best for a long binge?

Smallville is the longest choice, with ten seasons following Clark from adolescence toward his public identity. Superman & Lois is a more compact four-season family drama, while the animated series and Justice League Unlimited offer shorter episodes and a wide range of heroes and villains. Pick based on whether you want a coming-of-age saga or focused superhero stories.

Is Superman & Lois connected to other DC television shows?

The series began during the wider Arrowverse era, but it establishes its own version of Clark, Lois and their family rather than requiring viewers to know every crossover. You can follow its main story on its own. The show focuses on the Kents’ life in Smallville and the strain that Superman’s responsibilities place on the household.

Which entry has the best General Zod?

Superman II is a classic choice because Terence Stamp plays Zod as a commanding leader whose contempt for ordinary people contrasts with Clark. Man of Steel offers a forceful, tragic interpretation through Michael Shannon. They take different approaches: one is theatrical and comic-book-like, the other grounded in an epic science-fiction conflict.

Are the animated Superman shows suitable for younger viewers?

Superman: The Animated Series and My Adventures with Superman are accessible to many younger fans, but individual episodes include peril, frightening villains and action. Justice League Unlimited also explores political mistrust and moral dilemmas. Check the UK age guidance on the specific season or platform and decide based on a child’s comfort with animated superhero danger.

Do I need to watch Man of Steel before Zack Snyder’s Justice League?

It helps. Man of Steel introduces Henry Cavill’s Clark and the world that Zack Snyder’s Justice League continues, while Batman v Superman fills in the story between them. The director’s cut can be followed without every detail, but Superman’s absence and return carry more weight if you know the earlier films.

Where can I stream Superman films in the UK?

UK rights change regularly, and one film may be included with a subscription while another is only available to rent or buy. Check JustWatch UK before you start; its live-action Superman guide gathers the films and links to current service information. Availability can differ by title, season and provider.

What makes a Superman story different from other superhero stories?

Superman’s powers mean physical danger alone is rarely enough. The strongest stories focus on what he chooses to do with those powers, how Clark relates to ordinary people, and whether he can hold on to empathy while carrying enormous responsibility. Lois, the Kents, friends and even Lex make the question personal.

Should I watch the movies in release order?

For the Reeve films, release order is the easiest way to see how the character and filmmaking style develop. Man of Steel and Zack Snyder’s Justice League belong to a separate continuity, with Batman v Superman between them. The television series each build their own versions, so you can start an individual show without a film marathon.

That Love Podcast presents: American Bollywood — Episode 5

Format/Genre: A hilarious and heartfelt coming-of-age audio rom-com about first love, fake dating, friendship, secret crushes and discovering that sometimes the people who truly see you have been watching all along.

Logline: With only hours to find a fake boyfriend for her double date with Miles Pires Shah, Izzy Lopez turns to Selina for help — and what begins as a ridiculous school-wide search unexpectedly reveals just how many people have been quietly noticing Izzy for years.

Izzy Lopez has created a boyfriend who does not exist, Miles Pires Shah expects to meet him that evening, and Selina has decided there is only one reasonable solution: find a real boy willing to play the part. Her search leads to Mason Ramos and Jake Geller, two book-loving classmates who reveal that they have both secretly liked Izzy for years and are remarkably enthusiastic about competing for the position.

Selina transforms an empty classroom into a bizarre game show where Mason and Jake must prove who knows Izzy best. What begins as a ridiculous competition quickly becomes increasingly unsettling as both boys demonstrate an astonishing knowledge of Izzy’s favourite books, movies, habits and embarrassing secrets — leaving Izzy to discover that she may not have been nearly as invisible as she always believed.

The questions become more personal until Selina asks something neither boy can answer with simple facts: what has Izzy wanted to feel more than anything since she was fourteen? Mason’s answer cuts through Izzy’s jokes and books and gets frighteningly close to the truth — she wants to know that she is enough exactly as she is, without having to perform or transform herself for somebody else.

With the double date getting closer and Miles waiting to meet a boyfriend who was invented less than a day earlier, Izzy finally has someone willing to step into the role. But the line between pretending and genuinely caring may already be much messier than she expected, especially when her chosen fake boyfriend has feelings that are anything but fake.

American Bollywood Episode 5 delivers romantic comedy, fake-dating chaos and surprising emotional depth as Izzy’s plan to make Miles finally see her raises an uncomfortable new question: what happens when someone else already does?
