10 Best Black Rom-Coms of the 2020s, Ranked

17 min read

Finding a genuinely great Black rom-com from the 2020s can be harder than it should be, especially when streaming platforms throw romantic dramas, broad comedies and barely romantic movies into the same category. This ranking narrows things down to ten modern Black love stories worth putting on your watchlist, from Netflix comfort movies and glamorous destination romances to one South London gem that already feels like a modern classic. If you want chemistry, laughter, beautiful Black leads and romance that feels alive rather than manufactured, start here.

The decade has been interesting for Black romantic comedies because there has not been one dominant formula. Rye Lane gives us a colourful British walk-and-talk romance, Entergalactic turns Black love into gorgeous adult animation, and The Perfect Find lets Gabrielle Union play a stylish forty-something heroine whose career and love life collide spectacularly. Then you have newer Black romance movies such as Relationship Goals and You, Me & Tuscany, proving the genre is still finding new ways to package second chances, workplace rivalry, fake relationships and beautiful people making questionable decisions.

I am stretching the traditional rom-com definition slightly for two entries. The Photograph and Really Love are closer to romantic dramas, but both belong in any serious conversation about Black romance movies of the 2020s because their relationships, cultural specificity and performances have helped define what modern Black love looks like on screen. I would rather acknowledge that honestly than pretend they contain the same level of comedy as Rye Lane or You People.

What connects the best films here is that Black characters get to be messy, ambitious, sexy, awkward, funny, uncertain and hopelessly romantic. They fall in love while building careers, recovering from breakups, arguing with family, chasing creative dreams and occasionally lying their way into Italian villas. That range matters because Black romance deserves the same freedom to be escapist, complicated, silly and deeply emotional as every other corner of the genre.

You will find Netflix romantic comedies, Prime Video romance movies, British Black rom-coms, new 2026 romantic comedies, date-night movies and a couple of underrated Black love stories that deserve a much bigger audience. Some are better made than others, but every film on this list gives you a reason to care about the central relationship.

So grab the snacks, cancel the unnecessary evening plans and prepare to argue with my No. 1. Let’s get into it 👇

10. You People (2023)

I completely understand why You People divided viewers, because the movie can occasionally feel like it is trying to win an argument when it should simply let its excellent cast be funny. Kenya Barris directs this 2023 Netflix romantic comedy starring Jonah Hill as Ezra Cohen and Lauren London as Amira Mohammed, with Eddie Murphy, Nia Long, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and David Duchovny creating one spectacularly uncomfortable collection of future in-laws.

Ezra and Amira meet unexpectedly in Los Angeles and fall quickly enough that marriage soon enters the conversation. The real trouble begins when their very different families meet, turning the relationship into a collision involving race, religion, generational expectations and parents who cannot stop saying exactly the wrong thing. The premise is essentially the nightmare version of meeting your partner's family, stretched across an entire movie.

London brings an easy warmth that prevents the romance from disappearing underneath the social commentary, while Murphy gets some wonderfully dry reactions as Amira's intimidating father. The screenplay can push conversations too hard, but there are enough funny scenes and recognizable relationship anxieties to make this an interesting modern interracial rom-com.

It ranks tenth because the romance sometimes loses ground to the movie's bigger cultural debates. Still, if you want a Netflix Black romantic comedy with family chaos, an ensemble cast and plenty to discuss afterwards, it is worth the watch.

Where to watch: Stream You People now on Netflix.

9. Boxing Day (2021)

There are slicker Black romantic comedies on this list, but few have the specific cultural personality of Boxing Day. Aml Ameen directs and stars in the 2021 British Christmas rom-com alongside Aja Naomi King, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Tamara Lawrance and an ensemble that gives the movie the noisy family energy its story needs.

Melvin is a British author living in America who returns to London for Christmas with his American fiancée Lisa. She is about to meet his large British-Caribbean family, but the visit becomes considerably more complicated when Melvin's glamorous former girlfriend Georgia re-enters the picture and Lisa begins learning how much of his past has been conveniently left out of their relationship. Christmas dinner was never going to remain peaceful.

The film is at its best when it leans into London, Black British culture and the warmth and chaos of an extended Caribbean family. Ameen and King give the central relationship enough vulnerability to stop the romantic triangle from becoming pure sitcom machinery, while Pinnock brings genuine screen presence as Georgia.

The plotting is familiar, but I actually think familiarity works for a Christmas rom-com. This is comfort viewing with cultural specificity, and that makes it more memorable than another generic snow-covered streaming romance.

Where to watch: In the UK, Boxing Day is currently available through Channel 4 Plus and to rent or buy digitally.

8. Resort to Love (2021)

Sometimes you do not need the romantic comedy reinvented; you need Christina Milian on a beautiful island trying not to emotionally collapse at her ex-fiancé's wedding. Resort to Love understands that assignment perfectly. Directed by Steven K. Tsuchida, the 2021 Netflix movie stars Milian alongside Sinqua Walls, Jay Pharoah and Christiani Pitts.

Erica is a singer whose career and relationship have both fallen apart when she accepts a job performing at a luxury resort in Mauritius. Unfortunately, the destination wedding taking place there belongs to her ex Jason, who is preparing to marry Beverly while Erica is expected to smile professionally through the entire event. Then Jason's charismatic brother Caleb enters the picture and turns an already complicated situation into an entirely different kind of romantic problem.

Milian is extremely easy to root for, and Sinqua Walls brings the relaxed romantic energy the movie needs. The tropical setting, wedding comedy and musical moments make this one of the easiest feel-good Black romance movies to throw on when you want something uncomplicated.

It is predictable from approximately another island away, but that is not necessarily an insult. If your perfect date-night movie involves sunshine, music, attractive people and low emotional risk, this Netflix rom-com does the job.

Where to watch: Stream Resort to Love on Netflix.

7. Relationship Goals (2026)

I wanted at least one genuinely new Black romantic comedy near the middle of this ranking, and Relationship Goals earns that position through sheer star power and a classic second-chance setup. Released on Prime Video in February 2026, the Linda Mendoza-directed movie stars Kelly Rowland as ambitious television producer Leah Caldwell and Method Man as her former boyfriend Jarrett Roy.

Leah is preparing to make history by becoming the first woman to run a major New York morning show when Jarrett suddenly appears as competition for the same position. He insists he has changed, partly after embracing the lessons of the relationship book that gives the movie its title, while Leah has absolutely no intention of allowing romance to interfere with the career breakthrough she has spent years chasing. Unfortunately for her very organized plan, the chemistry has not disappeared.

Rowland gives Leah enough determination to make the workplace story feel important rather than decorative, while Method Man brings an unexpectedly relaxed romantic charm to Jarrett. Their shared history also means the film can skip the basic getting-to-know-you stage and dive directly into mistrust, attraction and old emotional baggage.

The movie is not reinventing second-chance romance, but it gives 2020s Black rom-com fans two grown leads with careers, history and believable reasons to hesitate. That alone makes it a useful addition to the decade.

Where to watch: Stream Relationship Goals on Prime Video.

6. The Perfect Find (2023)

Gabrielle Union should have been leading glossy romantic comedies for decades, and The Perfect Find makes that frustratingly obvious. Released on Netflix in 2023 and directed by Numa Perrier, the movie pairs Union with Keith Powers while Gina Torres gets to enjoy playing the kind of intimidating fashion boss who could silence an entire office with one look.

Union plays Jenna Jones, a fashion professional trying to rebuild her career after a public firing and painful breakup. At a party, she kisses a younger stranger named Eric, only to discover shortly afterwards that he is her new coworker and, much more dangerously, the son of her boss Darcy. Jenna now has to protect the career she desperately needs while attempting to ignore a relationship that becomes increasingly difficult to dismiss.

The age-gap romance is handled with more warmth than gimmickry because Union and Powers genuinely look comfortable together. Fashion, New York locations and the industry setting give the movie a polished visual identity, but I particularly like that Jenna is allowed to be successful, scared, romantic and uncertain in middle age.

This is not the funniest film in the ranking, yet it understands grown-up romantic stakes. If you like workplace romance movies, age-gap love stories and Netflix romantic comedies with glamorous leads, The Perfect Find deserves a spot on your watchlist.

Where to watch: Stream The Perfect Find on Netflix.

5. Really Love (2020)

Here is the first movie where I am knowingly stretching the words “rom-com,” because Really Love is much more interested in intimacy than punchlines. Angel Kristi Williams directs this 2020 romantic drama starring Kofi Siriboe and Yootha Wong-Loi-Sing, with supporting appearances from Uzo Aduba, Michael Ealy, Naturi Naughton and Blair Underwood.

Isaiah is a talented Black painter trying to establish himself inside Washington, D.C.'s competitive art world when he meets Stevie, an ambitious law student with her own expectations about adulthood and success. Their relationship develops alongside Isaiah's growing career, forcing both of them to confront how love fits around ambition, independence and the futures they imagined before meeting each other. The movie lets those tensions develop quietly instead of constantly manufacturing enormous twists.

Siriboe and Wong-Loi-Sing have intimate chemistry, and the photography gives Black skin, art and Washington social spaces a gorgeous warmth. There is an assured mood here that makes the romance feel lived-in rather than designed around genre checkpoints.

If you want laugh-out-loud comedy, choose something else on this list. If you want an underrated Black romance movie about creative ambition and young adulthood, Really Love is one of the decade's more sensual and thoughtful choices.

Where to watch: UK availability has changed, so check your preferred digital store or streaming service before watching; rental and purchase options may be available depending on platform.

4. Entergalactic (2022)

Entergalactic looks so good that you could almost mute it and still understand why I have placed it this high, although doing that would mean losing Kid Cudi's music and completely missing the point. Released by Netflix in 2022, the animated romantic comedy was created by Scott Mescudi and Kenya Barris, with Mescudi voicing Jabari opposite Jessica Williams as Meadow.

Jabari is an ambitious street artist moving into his dream Manhattan apartment while preparing for a major professional opportunity. His new neighbour Meadow is a photographer building her own creative life, and their attraction develops through parties, New York nights, mutual uncertainty and the inconvenient presence of Jabari's ex Carmen. The story itself is intentionally simple, allowing atmosphere, music and chemistry to carry much of the emotional weight.

The animation is extraordinary, borrowing comic-book textures and exaggerated colour without feeling like a copy of another animated hit. New York becomes part of the romance, while Jessica Williams gives Meadow a wonderfully grounded warmth against Jabari's more restless energy.

This is one of the best Black animated romance movies precisely because there are so few films like it. If you love music, adult animation, creative characters and modern urban romance, Entergalactic feels cooler and more visually adventurous than almost anything else here.

Where to watch: Stream Entergalactic on Netflix.

3. You, Me & Tuscany (2026)

There are more critically accomplished films in this ranking, but few are as aggressively designed to make you want romance, pasta and an Italian holiday at exactly the same time. Kat Coiro's 2026 romantic comedy stars Halle Bailey opposite Regé-Jean Page, with Will Packer producing and Tuscany doing approximately fifty percent of the flirting.

Bailey plays Anna, a young woman who has abandoned her dreams of becoming a chef and is drifting through life when an unexpected opportunity sends her to an empty villa in Tuscany. When the owner's mother unexpectedly appears, Anna allows her to believe that she is engaged to her son Matteo, creating a lie that becomes significantly harder to maintain when Matteo's cousin Michael arrives. Naturally, Michael is played by Regé-Jean Page, so maintaining emotional discipline was never realistic.

Bailey has an easy vulnerability that makes Anna's messiness likable, while Page knows exactly how to play romantic confidence without becoming unbearable. Add Italian food, vineyards, warm landscapes and fake-engagement chaos, and the movie understands the escapist side of the genre beautifully.

This is the kind of new Black rom-com I want studios making more often: glossy, unapologetically romantic and built around Black leads who get to inhabit pure cinematic fantasy. Sometimes love does not need realism; it needs Tuscany.

Where to watch: In the UK, You, Me & Tuscany is currently available to rent or buy digitally; availability on subscription services varies by country.

2. The Photograph (2020)

Calling The Photograph a romantic comedy is definitely generous, but leaving it outside a ranking about the defining Black romances of this decade would feel even more wrong. Stella Meghie's 2020 film stars Issa Rae and LaKeith Stanfield as Mae Morton and Michael Block, and their chemistry is so quietly convincing that the movie rarely needs dramatic tricks to make you care about them.

Mae is dealing with the death of her estranged mother, celebrated photographer Christina Eames, when journalist Michael begins researching Christina's life for a story. Their paths cross through that investigation, and a second love story from the past gradually begins informing the tentative relationship developing in the present. The film becomes as interested in emotional inheritance and vulnerability as it is in whether Mae and Michael will make things work.

Rae and Stanfield are terrific because neither performance feels desperate to manufacture a movie romance. They flirt, hesitate, talk over dinner and slowly allow themselves to become emotionally visible, while Robert Glasper's music and Meghie's photography create a dreamy atmosphere around them.

Choose this if your idea of a romantic movie is something sexy, adult and emotionally patient rather than packed with punchlines. There may be funnier Black rom-coms in the 2020s, but very few modern Black love stories feel this effortlessly sophisticated.

Where to watch: In the UK, The Photograph is currently available to rent or buy through services including Amazon Video and Apple TV.

1. Rye Lane (2023)

This was never really a difficult No. 1. Raine Allen-Miller's Rye Lane is not merely the best Black rom-com of the 2020s so far; I think it is one of the best romantic comedies of the decade full stop. Vivian Oparah and David Jonsson play Yas and Dom with the kind of immediate, funny chemistry that makes you forget how carefully constructed their seemingly spontaneous day together actually is.

The two meet in South London while both are recovering from painful breakups, then gradually end up spending the day walking through Peckham and Brixton together. Their conversation leads to food, friends, exes, impulsive decisions and escalating personal revelations, with each helping the other regain a little confidence after relationships that left them bruised. It is basically one extended meet-cute, yet it never feels thin.

The visual style is bursting with colour, using wide lenses, bold production design and a wonderfully playful view of South London. More importantly, Oparah and Jonsson are hilarious together, moving from teasing to vulnerability so naturally that the romance earns every emotional beat.

This is what I want from a modern rom-com: specific location, distinctive filmmaking, memorable leads, actual comedy and a romance I believe. Rye Lane feels Black and British without turning either identity into an explanation, and that confidence is exactly why it takes No. 1.

Where to watch: In the UK, Rye Lane is currently streaming on Disney+ and ITVX, with additional availability potentially changing over time.

Conclusion

The best Black rom-coms of the 2020s show how much more interesting the genre becomes when filmmakers stop treating Black romance as one specific type of story. Boxing Day gives us Black British Christmas chaos, Resort to Love provides tropical escapism, The Perfect Find tackles romance after forty, and Entergalactic turns young Black love into one of Netflix's most visually inventive animated projects.

If you want pure comfort viewing, start with Resort to Love. For something softer and more mature, choose The Photograph, while You, Me & Tuscany is my pick when you want glamorous romantic fantasy and absolutely no objection to spending two hours wishing you were in Italy.

But Rye Lane remains comfortably No. 1. It is funny without forcing the jokes, romantic without becoming syrupy and visually confident enough that you can recognise the movie from a single frame. Most importantly, Yas and Dom feel like two people you genuinely want to keep walking together after the credits roll.

10 FAQs About the Best Black Rom-Coms of the 2020s

1. What is the best Black rom-com of the 2020s?

Rye Lane is my pick for the best Black romantic comedy of the 2020s so far. Vivian Oparah and David Jonsson have terrific chemistry, the South London setting gives the movie a personality completely different from most American studio rom-coms, and the film is genuinely funny as well as romantic. It also has an exceptional 98% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes.

2. What are the best Black romance movies on Netflix?

Entergalactic, The Perfect Find, Resort to Love and You People are all useful Netflix choices if you want modern Black romance mixed with comedy. Entergalactic is the most visually adventurous, while Resort to Love is probably the easiest comfort watch. Netflix availability changes by region, so always check the service in your country before planning movie night.

3. Is Rye Lane a Black British rom-com?

Yes. Rye Lane is a British romantic comedy directed by Raine Allen-Miller and largely set around Peckham and Brixton in South London. Vivian Oparah plays Yas and David Jonsson plays Dom, two young Black Londoners recovering from difficult breakups who meet and spend an increasingly eventful day together. Its South London identity is one of the biggest reasons the film feels so distinctive.

4. Is The Photograph actually a romantic comedy?

Not really in the traditional sense. The Photograph is better described as a romantic drama, with much more emphasis on intimacy, grief, family history and emotional vulnerability than broad comedy. I included it because Issa Rae and LaKeith Stanfield's love story has become one of the defining Black screen romances of the 2020s, making it difficult to ignore in a broader conversation about the decade.

5. What is the best Black rom-com for date night?

Rye Lane is my strongest overall date-night recommendation because it is short, funny, stylish and romantic without becoming overly sentimental. If you want something more escapist, You, Me & Tuscany gives you Italian scenery and glossy romance, while Resort to Love is ideal for viewers who want a low-stress Netflix movie with a tropical setting.

6. What is You, Me & Tuscany about?

The 2026 romantic comedy stars Halle Bailey as Anna, a young woman whose impulsive trip to Tuscany leads her into a lie involving an Italian villa and a fake engagement. Complications multiply when she meets Michael, played by Regé-Jean Page, and their attraction threatens to expose everything. Kat Coiro directs the film, with Will Packer among its producers.

7. Which Black rom-com features Gabrielle Union?

Gabrielle Union stars in Netflix's The Perfect Find as Jenna Jones, a fashion professional rebuilding her career after a difficult breakup and professional setback. Her comeback becomes complicated when she begins secretly dating Eric, played by Keith Powers, only to discover that he is the son of her demanding new boss. Gina Torres also stars.

8. Are there any animated Black romance movies?

Entergalactic is one of the strongest recent examples. The 2022 Netflix project follows artist Jabari, voiced by Kid Cudi, and photographer Meadow, voiced by Jessica Williams, as their relationship develops in New York. Its combination of adult animation, hip-hop, romance, fashion and striking visual design makes it completely different from the live-action films on this list.

9. What Black Christmas rom-com should I watch?

Boxing Day is the obvious 2020s choice, especially if you want a Black British Christmas movie rather than another American small-town holiday romance. Aml Ameen directs and stars alongside Aja Naomi King and Leigh-Anne Pinnock in a story about a British author bringing his American fiancée home to meet his large British-Caribbean family. Predictably, Christmas becomes complicated.

10. What should I watch after Rye Lane?

If you loved the playful conversation and modern Black romance of Rye Lane, try Entergalactic next for another stylish city-set love story. The Photograph is a stronger choice if you want something quieter and more emotionally mature, while The Perfect Find gives you a glossy New York workplace romance. For pure romantic escapism, head straight to You, Me & Tuscany.
