10 Best Action Movies With Brutal Hand-to-Hand Combat
A memorable fight scene is more than fast cuts and loud impacts. The best hand-to-hand action movies make movement readable, give every fighter a style and let the surroundings become part of the choreography. You feel the decisions, not just the noise.
This ranking spans martial-arts classics, modern gun-fu and punishing Indonesian action. Each film uses physical combat differently: some are balletic, some raw, some deliberately comic. If you are searching for the best action movies with brutal fight scenes, this countdown is a useful place to start.

10. The Man from Nowhere
This Korean action thriller follows a quiet pawnshop owner who becomes entangled in a criminal operation after a child he cares about is taken. Won Bin’s performance is reserved, giving the film a sharp contrast between stillness and sudden violence. Its close combat has a desperate, personal quality rather than the polished feel of a superhero battle. The final confrontations are intense, but the film’s emotional bond is what makes them matter. It is an excellent pick for viewers who want action with grief and tenderness beneath it.

9. Ip Man
Donnie Yen’s Ip Man films helped bring Wing Chun choreography to a broad international audience. The first movie follows the martial artist during the Japanese occupation of Foshan, using combat to explore dignity, survival and cultural identity. The fights are controlled and precise, and Yen’s calm screen presence gives every exchange a distinct rhythm. This is a more traditional martial-arts drama than a contemporary action thriller, but it belongs among the best hand-to-hand combat movies because the choreography tells us who the characters are.

8. Extraction 2
Tyler Rake returns in a rescue story that moves from a prison break into a long, technically ambitious action sequence. Chris Hemsworth again plays the mercenary as physically formidable but visibly battered by his past. The fight scenes move through changing spaces, which gives the choreography a sense of tactical problem-solving instead of a string of isolated punches. Some violence is extremely graphic, so this is not a casual family pick. For fans of modern action filmmaking, it is one of the most confident large-scale entries.

7. Monkey Man
Dev Patel’s directorial debut follows a young man whose anger is shaped by a childhood tragedy and a violent present. The film draws from action cinema, folklore and social satire, while its fights feel messy, cramped and painful. That rawness suits a protagonist who is still becoming the fighter he wants to be. Monkey Man has more on its mind than combat, but the choreography expresses its themes of power and survival. It is a compelling choice for viewers who like their action films with a strong visual point of view.

6. The Night Comes for Us
Timo Tjahjanto’s Indonesian crime action film places Joe, an enforcer, on the run after he protects a child from a criminal organisation. The story is a framework for ferocious, close-range combat, with Iko Uwais and Joe Taslim bringing exceptional physical intensity. It is famously graphic, so the warning belongs up front: this is for viewers who can handle extreme screen violence. Its place on this list comes from the creativity and commitment of its fight design, not from being an easy watch.

5. Atomic Blonde
Charlize Theron’s Lorraine Broughton is an MI6 agent navigating a Berlin espionage mission that becomes increasingly dangerous. The film’s fights are exhausting by design; Lorraine takes damage, uses whatever is nearby and has to keep adapting. That makes the action feel markedly different from the frictionless heroics of many spy movies. The neon atmosphere and soundtrack add style, but the long stairwell sequence is where the film’s physical storytelling really shines. It is a top pick for viewers who value tactical combat and a formidable lead.

4. Nobody
The fight scenes in Nobody are brutal but also funny, because Hutch Mansell is neither a flawless superhero nor a polished martial artist. He gets winded, improvises and is frequently reminded that age and pain exist. Bob Odenkirk trained extensively for the role, and the film makes that physical effort part of its charm. The action builds into increasingly wild confrontations while maintaining a clear sense of Hutch’s character. It is the best choice here if you want close combat with dark humour and a suburban setting.

3. John Wick: Chapter 4
The fourth John Wick film expands the franchise’s choreography across striking locations, from Osaka to Paris. Keanu Reeves remains the centre of a long series of set pieces that combine close combat, firearms and almost game-like spatial design. The film is extravagant, but the fight language stays clear enough that you can follow the tactics. Its length is substantial, so it is best treated as an event movie rather than background viewing. Fans of carefully designed action will find it one of the franchise’s most ambitious chapters.

2. The Raid 2
Gareth Evans expands the first film’s contained survival premise into a wider crime saga. Iko Uwais’ Rama goes undercover, and the violence becomes part of a story about loyalty, family and institutional corruption. The choreography is intricate, but it never feels detached from character; every encounter tells us something about the world Rama has entered. The film is long and dense, yet its set pieces have a remarkable variety of styles and spaces. It is essential viewing for anyone exploring modern martial-arts action.

1. The Raid
The original The Raid is the purest hand-to-hand action experience on this list. A police team becomes trapped in a Jakarta apartment block controlled by a ruthless crime lord, and rookie officer Rama must fight his way through floor after floor. Gareth Evans uses the setting to create clear, escalating challenges, while Iko Uwais makes the silat choreography feel fast and dangerous. The stripped-down premise keeps attention on the craft. It earns No. 1 because the action, location and survival tension lock together with almost startling precision.

Strong action is easier to remember when it has a clear purpose, readable staging and characters whose choices matter. This list mixes those qualities with different styles, from grounded thrillers to larger-than-life spectacle.
Which film on this list is the best starting point?
The No. 1 pick is the strongest overall recommendation, but the best entry point depends on your mood. Choose a slower conspiracy thriller for story, or a choreography-led film when you want immediate action.
Are these movies suitable for children?
Several include strong violence, language or intense situations. Check the British Board of Film Classification guidance for the individual film before watching with younger viewers.
Where can I stream these movies in the UK?
Availability changes across subscription, rental and purchase services. Search the title inside your UK streaming apps and confirm whether it is included with a subscription or costs extra.
Which movie has the best fight choreography?
The most choreography-focused titles on this list approach action in different ways. The films with martial-arts roots favour close technique, while modern spy and hitman stories mix hand-to-hand combat with props and firearms.
Which action movie has the most realistic tone?
Several titles aim for grounded characters, while others openly embrace comic-book exaggeration. Check the individual entry descriptions to match your preference for realism or stylised spectacle.
What should I watch after John Wick?
The best follow-up depends on whether you want more assassins, revenge or stylish choreography. Atomic Blonde, Nobody and The Equalizer offer distinct versions of those action-thriller ingredients.
Are these movies based on books?
Some adapt novels, comics or existing characters, while others began as original screenplays. Official studio materials and reputable film databases can confirm each title’s source.
