10 Best Action Movies About Assassins and Hitmen
Assassin movies work best when the job is only the beginning. A killer’s code, a botched assignment or one unexpected human connection can turn a simple contract into a story about identity and consequence. The best hitman thrillers make the profession feel like a world with rules—and then find inventive ways to break them.
This countdown moves between sleek spy action, dark comedy, neo-noir and martial-arts spectacle. Some entries feature professional killers; others follow spies or hired guns whose work puts them on a collision course with their own past. For anyone looking for action movies about assassins and hitmen, these are ten distinctive places to begin.

10. Bullet Train
Brad Pitt plays Ladybug, an assassin who wants a low-stress assignment and receives the opposite: a train full of killers, competing motives and tightly linked coincidences. The film is bright, fast and deliberately comic, using the confined setting to create a chain reaction of fights and reveals. Its characters are more colourful than psychologically deep, but the cast gives the chaos an easy rhythm. This is a good pick when you want a hitman movie that is closer to a pop-art action comedy than a sombre crime thriller.

9. The Hitman's Bodyguard
Ryan Reynolds’ disgraced protection agent is hired to escort Samuel L. Jackson’s notorious hitman to testify at an international tribunal. Their clashing personalities create a buddy-comedy engine, while the chase plot provides enough explosions to keep things moving. The movie is broad and not especially subtle, but the central pairing is fun when it leans into timing rather than spectacle. Choose it for a lighter assassin action film that values banter and road-movie energy.

8. Smokin' Aces
Joe Carnahan’s crime thriller sends an assortment of hitmen after a Las Vegas entertainer who may testify against a mob boss. The ensemble structure gives the film a frantic, unpredictable quality, as different personalities collide around the same target. Its violence is heightened and its tone can be chaotic, but that excess is part of the point. It is the right choice if you want a crowded, darkly comic hitman story rather than a single-protagonist character study.

7. The American
George Clooney plays Jack, an assassin hiding in an Italian village while preparing one final job. The film is slow, quiet and visually attentive, making it a striking contrast to more explosive entries. Its tension comes from routine, loneliness and the possibility that someone has noticed him. Clooney’s restrained performance gives the story a thoughtful centre. This is the recommendation for viewers who want a European neo-noir about a professional killer trying to imagine another life.
Who should watch it: action fans looking for committed performances, clear stakes and memorable set pieces. Where to watch: UK streaming and rental rights change regularly; check the current official service listing.
6. The Mechanic
Jason Statham plays Arthur Bishop, a hitman whose work depends on planning each murder to look accidental. When a personal connection draws him into a partnership, the film becomes a test of trust and skill. The premise supports a crisp action thriller, and Statham’s physical confidence fits the role. It is more interested in process than deep character psychology, which makes it a straightforward choice for viewers seeking an efficient assassin movie with training, surveillance and a double-cross.

5. Wanted
James McAvoy’s Wesley is an office worker who discovers a hidden family connection to a secret group of assassins. The film’s action takes a fantastical turn, with stylised gunplay and an exaggerated visual language that deliberately ignores realism. Angelina Jolie and Morgan Freeman lend the world an appealing sense of mystery. It is a divisive but entertaining pick for viewers who want comic-book assassin action rather than grounded spycraft.

4. Atomic Blonde
Lorraine Broughton is an MI6 operative sent to Berlin during the Cold War, where an intelligence list and a compromised network make every alliance suspect. Charlize Theron brings a sharp, controlled presence to the character, while the film’s bruising action sequences make her competence feel hard-earned. The story has a puzzle-box structure, but its visual style and fight choreography are the main draw. It is one of the most distinctive modern spy-assassin movies on this list.

3. The Killer
David Fincher’s The Killer follows a meticulous contract killer whose carefully organised routine begins to fracture after a job goes wrong. Michael Fassbender’s performance is deliberately contained, and the film uses voiceover, repetition and procedural detail to reveal the distance between the killer’s self-image and reality. It is not a conventional action spectacle; the tension comes from professionalism under pressure. Choose it when you want a cool, precise hitman thriller with dry humour and a director’s meticulous style.

2. Collateral
Tom Cruise plays Vincent, a contract killer who forces taxi driver Max to drive him across Los Angeles during a night of assassinations. Jamie Foxx provides an increasingly compelling counterpoint as an ordinary man trapped in a terrible situation. Michael Mann’s city-at-night cinematography turns the streets into a character, while the story’s one-night structure keeps the pressure steady. It is both a stylish assassin movie and an intimate character thriller. The conversations are as important as the gunfire.

1. John Wick
John Wick earns the top spot because the film makes its assassin world feel instantly legible and endlessly expandable. Keanu Reeves plays a retired killer pulled back into action, and the movie builds a rich mythology around the people, rules and safe havens that surround him. The choreography is crisp, the action has rhythm, and Wick’s grief gives the revenge premise emotional weight. It is the strongest all-round choice for anyone searching for the best hitman action movies.

The No. 1 pick is the strongest overall recommendation, but the best entry point depends on your mood. Choose a slower conspiracy thriller for story, or a choreography-led film when you want immediate action.
