15. Meet the Parents (2000)

 Meet the Parents (2000)

The Vibe: The ultimate, iconic, and gloriously cringe-inducing comedy of errors. This is a masterclass in awkward, relatable humour that will have you watching through your fingers.

The Premise: The film follows the well-meaning but incredibly unlucky male nurse, Greg Focker (Ben Stiller), as he travels to meet his girlfriend's family for the first time. The only problem? His girlfriend's father is the intimidating, ex-CIA operative, Jack Byrnes (a legendary Robert De Niro), who is deeply suspicious of his daughter's new beau. What follows is a weekend of escalating, catastrophic disasters, as everything that can possibly go wrong for poor Greg, does.

Why It's a Binge-worthy Rom-Com: Meet the Parents is a comedy classic for a reason. It is a film that is so packed with iconic, hilarious, and painfully awkward set pieces—from the volleyball game to the disastrous dinner scene—that it is impossible not to be entertained. The comedic chemistry between the affable Ben Stiller and the deadpan, intimidating Robert De Niro is a work of genius. But beneath all the cringe comedy, the film has a sweet and relatable romantic core. It’s a story about the universal, terrifying experience of trying to win over your partner's family.

What Makes It a Classic: The film was a massive, global blockbuster that spawned two successful sequels. It is a film that has become a part of our cultural lexicon, a go-to for anyone who has ever felt the intense pressure of a "meet the parents" weekend. The show’s complex family dynamics are central to its appeal, a theme you can explore in our list of The Top 5 Best Family Movies of All Time.

Where to Buy and Stream: Stream Meet the Parents on Amazon Prime Video with a relevant subscription, or rent on major platforms.

14. Licorice Pizza (2021)

 Licorice Pizza (2021)

The Vibe: A sun-drenched, hazy, and wonderfully nostalgic journey back to the 1970s San Fernando Valley. It's a quirky, free-wheeling, and deeply charming coming-of-age story.

The Premise: This Oscar-nominated dramedy from the visionary director Paul Thomas Anderson follows the unlikely friendship and tentative, on-again, off-again romance between the precocious, 15-year-old child actor and entrepreneur, Gary Valentine, and the world-weary, 25-year-old photographer's assistant, Alana Kane. The film is a series of interconnected vignettes that follow the duo on a series of wild and chaotic business ventures, from selling waterbeds to opening a pinball arcade.

Why It's a Binge-worthy Rom-Com: Licorice Pizza is an unconventional but deeply romantic film. It is a beautiful and authentic portrait of a specific time and place, and the performances from its two young, breakout stars, Alana Haim (of the band Haim) and Cooper Hoffman (son of the late, great Philip Seymour Hoffman), are absolutely phenomenal. The film perfectly captures the thrilling, terrifying, and often completely illogical feeling of a first, all-consuming crush.

What Makes It a Classic: The film was a massive critical success, praised for its stunning cinematography, its incredible soundtrack, and its warm, nostalgic, and deeply humanistic spirit. It is a film that is a true work of art, a beautiful and poignant exploration of the messy, beautiful, and unforgettable journey of growing up. For a deep dive into the film's incredible 70s soundtrack, Pitchfork has a fantastic article. 13. Congrats My Ex! (2023)

Congrats My Ex! (2023)

The Vibe: A vibrant, fun, and refreshingly international romantic comedy that is a heartfelt and hilarious exploration of second chances and moving on.

The Premise: This charming Thai-Indian rom-com follows the story of Risa, a wedding planner whose business is on the brink of collapse. She lands a huge, make-or-break job: to plan a lavish and extravagant Indian wedding in Thailand. The only problem? The clients are her handsome, charming, and still-very-much-in-love-with-her ex-boyfriend, and his beautiful new bride-to-be. To make matters even more complicated, she is forced to hire a rival, and equally handsome, wedding videographer to help her pull off the event.

Why It's a Binge-worthy Rom-Com: Congrats My Ex! is a perfect example of the incredible, and increasingly popular, world of international romantic comedies. The film is a visual feast, a stunning showcase of the beautiful locations and the vibrant, colourful traditions of both Thai and Indian cultures. 12. Somebody I Used to Know (2023)

Somebody I Used to Know (2023)

The Premise: The film follows Ally, a workaholic television producer who, after a major career setback, decides to return to the comfort of her rural hometown. There, she has an unexpected and incredibly charming reunion with her first love, Sean. As they spend time together, reminiscing about their past, she begins to question the choices she has made in her life. Her trip down memory lane is complicated by the fact that Sean is now engaged to be married to a younger woman, Cassidy, who reminds Ally a lot of the person she used to be.

Why It's a Binge-worthy Rom-Com: This is not your typical, "girl goes home to win back her high school sweetheart" rom-com. It is a much more thoughtful, mature, and emotionally complex film. Co-written by its star, Alison Brie, and her husband, Dave Franco (who also directs), the film is a nuanced exploration of what it means to grow up and to let go of the past. The film is a powerful reminder that sometimes, the greatest love story is not the one you have with someone else, but the one you have with yourself.

What Makes It a Top Show: The film is a fantastic, and often very funny, deconstruction of the classic rom-com tropes. It’s a film that is less about who gets the guy, and more about a woman rediscovering and falling in love with herself. The show’s focus on a powerful journey of self-discovery is a key to its success, a theme you can explore in our list of the Top 7 Best Coming of Age Movies of All Time.

Where to Buy and Stream: Stream Somebody I Used to Know on Amazon Prime Video.

After an international incident at a royal wedding forces them into a fake, PR-driven friendship, their staged truce soon blossoms into a secret, passionate, and incredibly complicated romance that could have major international implications.

Why It's a Binge-worthy Rom-Com: Red, White & Royal Blue is a pure, unadulterated, joyful delight. The film perfectly captures the sharp, witty, and incredibly romantic spirit of the original novel. The chemistry between the two leads, Taylor Zakhar Perez and Nicholas Galitzine, is absolutely electric. Their shared mission to sabotage the wedding soon leads to a series of comedic mishaps and, just maybe, a reigniting of their own, long-dormant sparks.

Why It's a Binge-worthy Rom-Com: The sheer, unadulterated pleasure of watching George Clooney and Julia Roberts be movie stars is the primary, and most wonderful, reason to watch this film. Their chemistry is legendary, and their witty, bickering banter is an absolute delight. She is forced to go on a book tour with Alan, the handsome but vapid cover model for her books, who is the real-life embodiment of her fictional hero, "Dash." Her life is thrown into chaos when she is kidnapped by an eccentric billionaire who believes that the lost city from her latest book is real. Alan, in a misguided attempt to prove that he is a real-life hero, sets out on a bumbling, and surprisingly effective, mission to rescue her.

Why It's a Binge-worthy Rom-Com: The Lost City is an absolute blast from start to finish. The comedic and romantic chemistry between the legendary Sandra Bullock and the incredibly charming Channing Tatum is a joy to watch. The film is a perfect blend of a laugh-out-loud, screwball comedy and a genuinely thrilling, high-stakes action-adventure. Daniel Radcliffe is also hilarious as the film's eccentric and slightly pathetic villain.

What Makes It a Top Show: The film was a huge critical and commercial success, praised for its brilliant humour and the incredible, charismatic performances of its two leads. It is a perfect, feel-good, crowd-pleasing blockbuster that is a wonderful reminder of the pure, simple joy of a great movie-star-driven adventure. 8. 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

The Vibe: The ultimate, iconic, and perfectly crafted 90s teen rom-com. It's a witty, charming, and surprisingly heartfelt modern retelling of a Shakespearean classic.

The Premise: While it was released just before the 25-year cutoff, its enduring popularity on streaming makes it an essential inclusion. The film is a brilliant, modern-day adaptation of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, set in an American high school. The story follows two sisters: the popular and beautiful Bianca, who is not allowed to date until her fiercely intelligent, cynical, and "shrewish" older sister, Kat, does. To get around this rule, a new student, Cameron, pays the school's mysterious, bad-boy outcast, Patrick Verona, to try and win Kat's heart.

Why It's a Binge-worthy Rom-Com: 10 Things I Hate About You is a masterpiece of the teen rom-com genre. The script is a work of genius, filled with some of the most iconic and quotable lines in movie history. 6. The Big Sick (2017)

 The Big Sick (2017)

The Vibe: A hilarious, heartbreaking, and deeply authentic romantic comedy based on a real-life love story that is a powerful and important exploration of cross-cultural relationships and the true meaning of commitment.

The Premise: Based on the real-life courtship of the film's writers, comedian Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon, the film follows Kumail (playing himself), a struggling Pakistani-American stand-up comedian who falls for an American graduate student named Emily. Their burgeoning relationship is complicated by the immense pressure from Kumail's traditional Muslim family, who expect him to have an arranged marriage. After their relationship hits a rocky patch, Emily suddenly falls into a coma due to a mysterious illness. Kumail is then forced to navigate this medical crisis alongside Emily's sharp-witted and fiercely protective parents, all while confronting his true feelings for her.

Why It's a Binge-worthy Rom-Com: The Big Sick completely subverts the traditional rom-com structure by placing one of its romantic leads in a coma for a significant portion of the film. The "getting to know the parents" trope is turned into a profound and often hilarious exploration of family, culture, and connection in the face of a crisis. The film is a brilliant and heartfelt look at the challenges of interracial and inter-religious relationships, and it does so with a huge amount of humour, honesty, and specificity. 3. Silver Linings Playbook (2012)

Silver Linings Playbook (2012)

The Vibe: A chaotic, funny, and deeply compassionate romantic dramedy that is a powerful and stigma-shattering exploration of mental health.

The Premise: The film, from director David O. Russell, follows Pat Solitano Jr., a man with bipolar disorder who has just been released from a psychiatric hospital. Determined to win back his estranged wife, he meets Tiffany Maxwell, a young, recently widowed woman who is grappling with her own depression. The two form a reluctant, and incredibly volatile, bond as they agree to help each other, a partnership that culminates in them training for a local dance competition.

Why It's a Binge-worthy Rom-Com: Silver Linings Playbook is a romantic comedy that is not afraid to be messy, loud, and deeply, profoundly real about the challenges of life and love. The relationship between Pat and Tiffany is not a magical "cure" for their conditions; it is a messy, complicated, and deeply supportive partnership between two people who see, understand, and accept each other's broken pieces. The performances from Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence (who won an Oscar for her role) are absolutely phenomenal.

2. (500) Days of Summer (2009)

(500) Days of Summer (2009)

The Vibe: A witty, stylish, and bittersweet deconstruction of the romantic comedy that is a perfect, poignant exploration of love, loss, and the dangers of romantic idealization.

The Premise: The film immediately and famously announces, "This is not a love story. This is a story about love." It chronicles the 500-day relationship between Tom, a hopeless romantic, and Summer, the beautiful, quirky new girl in the office who does not believe in true love. The story is told in a non-linear fashion, jumping back and forth through the highs and lows of their time together.

Why It's a Binge-worthy Rom-Com: (500) Days of Summer is a brilliant and incisive critique of the very genre to which it belongs. The film masterfully subverts the "Manic Pixie Dream Girl" trope, a common archetype where a quirky woman exists solely to teach a broody male protagonist how to live. Summer is a complex, fully-realised individual with her own agency; it is Tom's failure to see her as a real person that is the true tragedy of the story. The film's iconic "Expectations vs. Reality" split-screen sequence is a work of genius. The film’s incredible soundtrack, featuring artists like The Smiths, is a huge part of its enduring appeal, a theme you can explore in our list of Top 10 Michael Jackson Songs of All Time (as another artist with an iconic sound).

What Makes It a Classic: The film was a breakout indie hit and has become a beloved modern classic. It is a film that is both a stylish, funny, and incredibly charming romantic comedy, and a smart, sophisticated, and deeply poignant meditation on the nature of memory and heartbreak.

1. Amélie (2001)

Amélie (2001)

Why It's at the Top: While every film on this list is a brilliant deconstruction or a modern classic, Jean-Pierre Jeunet's Amélie is a true work of art, a film that completely transcends the genre to become something wholly unique, magical, and unforgettable. It is a film that is not just a romantic comedy; it is a two-hour-long injection of pure, unadulterated joy. Its visual inventiveness, its profound sense of whimsy, and its deep, abiding belief in the goodness of people make it the ultimate, feel-good movie. It is a timeless, perfect, and life-affirming masterpiece that is, quite simply, one of the greatest films ever made.

The Premise: The film follows the enchanting life of Amélie Poulain, a shy and imaginative young waitress who works in a Montmartre café in a hyper-realized, magical version of Paris. After discovering a hidden treasure in her apartment, she decides to dedicate her life to orchestrating small, anonymous acts of kindness in the lives of her neighbours. As she brings joy to those around her, she is forced to confront her own loneliness and to take a chance on a quirky and unconventional romance with Nino, a man who collects discarded photo booth pictures.

What Makes It a Classic: Amélie was a global phenomenon, a critical and commercial success that introduced the world to the unique charm of modern French cinema. The film is a visual masterpiece, with a vibrant, saturated colour palette and an endlessly inventive series of visual gags. Audrey Tautou's performance as Amélie is one of the most charming and iconic in modern film history. And Yann Tiersen's iconic, accordion-and-piano-driven soundtrack is one of the most beloved and instantly recognizable of all time. The film’s iconic soundtrack is a key to its success, a theme you can explore in our list of Top 10 Best Disney Soundtracks of All Time.
