Easy Adonis Cocktail: The Low-ABV Classic That’s Stealing the Spotlight

Easy Adonis Cocktail: The Low-ABV Classic That’s Stealing the Spotlight

Raise your glass to a drink that’s making waves in the cocktail world with its timeless charm and modern appeal: the Easy Adonis Cocktail. This vermouth-led sipper, blending the nutty richness of sherry with the herbal sweetness of sweet vermouth, is a low-ABV (alcohol by volume) masterpiece that’s as elegant as it is effortless. Once a staple of Gilded Age bars, the Adonis is staging a dazzling comeback, popping up on trendy menus and home bar carts alike. Whether you’re a cocktail connoisseur or just dipping your toes into mixology, this sophisticated yet simple drink is about to become your new favorite. Ready to shake up a glass of history? Let’s dive into why the Adonis is trending and how to craft it at home!

Why the Adonis Cocktail Is the Drink of the Moment

Low-ABV cocktails are having a major moment, and the Adonis is riding the wave with style. In an era where mindful drinking is on the rise, this classic offers all the complexity of a craft cocktail without the heavy booze punch—perfect for sipping slowly at brunches, dinner parties, or cozy nights in. Named after a Broadway musical from the 1880s, the Adonis combines the warm, oxidized notes of sherry with the bittersweet depth of sweet vermouth, finished with a dash of orange bitters for a refined edge. It’s trending because it’s approachable, versatile, and delivers big flavor with minimal ingredients. Plus, its lower alcohol content means you can enjoy a second round guilt-free. Here’s everything you need to mix up this revived gem.

Ingredients for the Adonis Cocktail

This recipe makes one cocktail and takes just 5 minutes to prepare. You’ll need a few quality ingredients, but don’t worry—they’re easy to find at most liquor stores or online.

For the Cocktail:

  • 1 ½ oz fino or manzanilla sherry (dry and crisp varieties work best)

  • 1 ½ oz sweet vermouth (look for brands like Carpano Antica or Dolin)

  • 2 dashes orange bitters

  • Ice cubes (for stirring)

  • Orange peel or twist, for garnish

Equipment:

  • Mixing glass or cocktail shaker

  • Bar spoon

  • Julep or Hawthorne strainer

  • Chilled coupe or martini glass

Easy Adonis Cocktail: The Low-ABV Classic That’s Stealing the Spotlight

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Chill Your GlassPop a coupe or martini glass in the freezer for 5-10 minutes while you prep. A chilled glass keeps your Adonis crisp and refreshing—don’t skip this step for that pro-level touch!

Step 2: Combine the IngredientsFill a mixing glass or cocktail shaker with ice cubes. Pour in 1 ½ oz of sherry, 1 ½ oz of sweet vermouth, and add 2 dashes of orange bitters. The equal parts make this recipe a breeze to remember.

Step 3: Stir, Don’t ShakeUsing a bar spoon, stir the mixture gently for 20-30 seconds until well-chilled and slightly diluted. Stirring (rather than shaking) keeps the drink silky and clear, preserving its elegant vibe. You’re channeling 19th-century bartenders here—own it!

Step 4: Strain and ServeStrain the cocktail into your chilled coupe or martini glass using a julep or Hawthorne strainer to catch the ice. The Adonis should look polished and amber-hued, like a sunset in a glass.

Step 5: Garnish with FlairExpress an orange peel over the drink by gently twisting it to release its oils, then drop it into the glass or drape it over the rim. This adds a bright, citrusy aroma that elevates every sip.

Step 6: Sip and SavorTake a moment to admire your creation, then sip slowly to appreciate the interplay of sherry’s nutty dryness, vermouth’s herbal sweetness, and the bitters’ subtle spice. This is a drink meant to be savored, not rushed.

Tips for Nailing the Adonis Cocktail

  • Sherry Selection: Fino or manzanilla sherry keeps it light and crisp, but amontillado adds a richer, nuttier vibe if you want to experiment. Avoid cream sherries—they’re too sweet.

  • Vermouth Matters: Use a fresh bottle of sweet vermouth (store it in the fridge after opening) for the best flavor. Stale vermouth can dull the drink’s vibrancy.

  • Bitters Boost: Orange bitters are traditional, but a dash of Angostura can add a warm, spicy twist if you’re feeling adventurous.

  • Batch It Up: Hosting a crowd? Scale up the recipe (equal parts sherry and vermouth) and pre-mix in a pitcher. Stir with ice just before serving.

Why This Cocktail Is a Game-Changer

The Adonis Cocktail is proof that less can be more. Its low-ABV nature—clocking in at roughly half the strength of a martini—makes it perfect for daytime sipping or pairing with food, from charcuterie boards to seafood dishes. The sherry and vermouth dance together in a way that’s both refreshing and complex, with the orange bitters tying it all together like a bow on a gift. It’s trending for its simplicity (just three ingredients!) and sophistication, offering a taste of cocktail history with a modern, mindful twist. Whether you’re a seasoned mixologist or a newbie, this drink is a breeze to master and a joy to share.

Conclusion

The Easy Adonis Cocktail is more than just a drink—it’s a vibe, a nod to the past, and a celebration of today’s love for balanced, flavorful sipping. With its low-ABV allure, elegant presentation, and effortless prep, this vermouth-led classic is the perfect addition to your cocktail repertoire. Whether you’re hosting a chic soirée or unwinding after a long day, the Adonis delivers a refined experience that’s as approachable as it is impressive. So grab your sherry, dust off that mixing glass, and toast to a cocktail that’s making history all over again. Cheers to that!

FAQs

  1. What’s the ABV of an Adonis Cocktail?

It’s around 10-15% ABV, depending on the sherry and vermouth, much lower than most cocktails.

  2. Can I use dry vermouth instead?

Dry vermouth makes a different drink (closer to a Bamboo cocktail). Stick with sweet for the classic Adonis.

  3. How do I store sherry and vermouth?

Keep both in the fridge after opening. Sherry lasts about a month, vermouth about 3-4 weeks.

  4. Can I make it without bitters?

You can, but orange bitters add depth. If you skip them, up the orange peel garnish for citrusy flair.

  5. Is this cocktail sweet?

It’s balanced—sweet vermouth brings mild sweetness, tempered by sherry’s dryness and bitters’ spice.

  6. Can I serve it on the rocks?

Yes, but stirring and serving up (no ice) is traditional for a smoother texture.

  7. What foods pair well with an Adonis?

Try olives, almonds, charcuterie, or light seafood like shrimp or scallops.

  8. Can I batch it for a party?

Absolutely! Mix equal parts sherry and vermouth with bitters, chill, and stir with ice before serving.

  9. What if I don’t have a mixing glass?

Use a large glass or shaker tin—just make sure to stir, not shake.

  10. Can I make it non-alcoholic?

Try non-alcoholic fortified wine substitutes (like Lyre’s) and a few drops of orange extract for a mocktail version.
