3. Matchbox The Movie — 9 October
A movie inspired by miniature cars could have been almost anything. Apple has chosen a globetrotting action adventure built around an old group of friends whose lives are upended when one of them comes home with a dangerous secret.
John Cena plays Sean, their long-absent former leader and an undercover CIA agent. His return pulls the group into an international pursuit to save the world. Jessica Biel, Sam Richardson, Teyonah Parris and Arturo Castro are among the ensemble, with Sam Hargrave directing.
That is more promising than a story whose only selling point is a recognisable toy brand. The childhood-friends angle gives the action a potential emotional engine: people who knew one another before adult responsibilities, disappointments and distance changed them are suddenly forced to work as a team again. If the film pays attention to those relationships, the spectacle may have something to hold it together.
Hargrave’s involvement points towards action as a major attraction, but it would be premature to judge the finished set pieces from a cast list and trailer. Genden Phuntsok plays Tenzing, with Tom Hiddleston as Hillary. Jennifer Peedom directs. The film follows Tenzing’s path towards the expedition, including the support of his wife Dawa, played by Thinley Lhamo, and expedition secretary Jill Henderson, played by Caitríona Balfe. If you would rather watch a documentary than a scripted adventure, add The Last First: Winter K2 to your calendar for 2 October.
