Beyond The Office UK: Rom-Com TV Shows That Fueled That Love Podcast

Updated: Aug 2, 2024

The television series "The Office" revolutionized the sitcom genre when it premiered in 2005 in the US. However, a year before that, the British version of the show had already made waves in the UK with its documentary-style format and deadpan humor. The show's success can be attributed to its ability to depict the everyday lives of office workers in a relatable and authentic way.

Unlike traditional sitcoms, "The Office" did not rely on a laugh track to cue viewers on when to find something funny. The humor was often subtle and nuanced, requiring the audience to pay close attention to the dialogue and physical comedy. The show's creators, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, wanted to create a show that felt like a real documentary and was not overly polished or rehearsed.

The show is set in a mundane paper company called Wernham Hogg and follows the lives of its employees. The main character, David Brent, is the boss of the company and an insufferable narcissist. Brent's interactions with his subordinates and his desperate attempts to be liked by them are both cringe-worthy and hilarious.

One of the show's strengths is its ability to capture the small, everyday moments that happen in an office setting. Whether it's a petty argument over staplers or an awkward silence during a meeting, the show accurately portrays the mundanity of office life. This relatability is what makes the show so entertaining and has allowed it to become a classic.

"The Office" has also been praised for its ability to address serious topics such as sexism and racism in a humorous yet thoughtful way. One standout episode deals with Brent's attempts to be politically correct, which ultimately backfire and highlight his own prejudices. The show is not afraid to tackle difficult subjects and has helped to pave the way for more socially conscious comedies.

Overall, "The Office" is a testament to the power of authenticity in storytelling. By avoiding the traditional sitcom format and creating a show that felt like a real documentary, Gervais and Merchant were able to capture the everyday moments of office life in a way that was both relatable and entertaining. The show's impact can still be felt today, with numerous adaptations and spin-offs being made in countries around the world.

Episode of the Week

That Love Podcast presents: Stolen Kiss — Episode 3

An audio romantic drama series about second chances, self-sabotage, and the terrifying moment you finally stop running from the love you've always deserved.

Logline: When Stephanie's secret rendezvous explodes into a bar brawl, a jealousy plot, and an unexpected proposal, Diane and Jack are forced to confront the one question they've been dodging since the beginning — if love is worth fighting for, why are they still fighting each other?

Episode Summary: It starts with a stakeout outside a trendy bar, where Diane and Jack watch Stephanie's secret meetings with the very married Dr. Luke Jacobs unravel in spectacular fashion when her ex, Antonio, walks in swinging. What follows is a cascade of bad decisions, emergency negotiations, and one of the most unexpectedly tender conversations in Stolen Kiss history — as Diane sits with Stephanie and dismantles, piece by piece, every wall she's ever built around her heart. Meanwhile, Jack squares off with Luke in his own driveway, armed with nothing but nerve and leverage, and somehow pulls off the impossible. By the time Antonio drops to one knee in a police station parking lot, carrying a ring he's held onto for years, the question of whether love actually lasts has its answer. But as Stephanie and Antonio finally find their way back to each other, Diane turns to Jack — and he runs. Because some people are brave enough to fix everyone else's love story before they can face their own.
