March 2024: Amazon Prime Video Brings Action, Laughs, and Nostalgic Revivals

While Amazon Prime Video typically offers a diverse selection, this March the focus is clear: thrilling action, a hefty dose of comedy, and a sprinkling of nostalgic favorites. Get ready for a month of entertainment likely to appeal to a predominantly male audience seeking lighthearted, high-energy content.

Five Nights at Freddy's

If last year's box office success of Five Nights at Freddy's (available March 5) came as a surprise, you likely missed this game-turned-cultural-phenomenon popular with younger audiences. Adapting the jump scare-filled survival horror game, the film follows a night watchman stalked by killer animatronics at a seemingly harmless pizza parlor. While critics weren't impressed, it's worth a watch for parents seeking to understand their kids' latest obsession.

Ricky Stanicky

Peter Farrelly, the director known for gross-out comedies like "Dumb and Dumber," delivers another outrageous premise in "Ricky Stanicky" (March 7). The film revolves around three friends who've spent years blaming their misbehavior on an imaginary friend. When their lies catch up to them, they hire a down-on-his-luck actor (John Cena in all his muscle-bound glory) to bring Ricky to life. Expect absurdity, cringe-worthy hijinks, and very little subtlety.

Invincible Season 2, Part 2

The breakout animated hit Invincible continues its bloody saga on March 14. New to the series? Mark Grayson is a seemingly typical teen who discovers his father is not only the revered hero Omni-Man, but an alien conqueror plotting Earth's subjugation. With his newfound powers, Mark clashes with his father in a story filled with shocking twists, brutal violence, and surprisingly complex family drama.

Road House

Fans of the original "Road House" have a mix of fondness and ironic love for its over-the-top action and cheesy dialogue. Play on this nostalgia: "Can Jake Gyllenhaal fill Patrick Swayze's shoes as the coolest bouncer in the Florida Keys? The 'Road House' remake promises action, brawls, and a chance to revisit a cult classic with a modern spin."

Beyond Gyllenhaal, the cast boasts intriguing names. Mention them! "With Billy Magnussen as the villain, Daniela Melchior ('The Suicide Squad') as a potential love interest, and even UFC superstar Conor McGregor making an appearance, the 'Road House' remake brings a fresh mix of talent to the table."

Tig Notaro is known for her dry wit and candid, observational humor. "If you love comedians who turn life's absurdities into hilarious stories, don't miss Tig Notaro's 'Hello Again.' She brings her signature sharp humor to relatable anecdotes about health issues, family dynamics, and the everyday awkwardness of life."

The Takeaway

Amazon Prime Video's March lineup emphasizes easy-watching entertainment that skews towards action, humor, and well-known properties. While it may not be a month for award-winning dramas or groundbreaking storytelling, there's plenty of escapist fun to be had.

Episode of the Week

HELL NAH TO EASTER — Episode 1: The Backstory Nobody Asked For

An audio romantic comedy series from That Love Podcast.

Logline: A sharp-tongued only child with a deadbeat NBA father, a born-again Irish mother, and a lifelong habit of fleeing the country every Easter finally meets the man who might make her stop running — but first, she has to survive dinner.

Episode Summary: Hell Nah to Easter opens with Bur Kell, a woman who has perfected the art of disappearing to Paris every Easter with a fake beret and a real wine habit. Raised between two worlds — an Irish village with twelve people and forty-seven sheep, and the shadow of a famous, absent father — Bur's life has never been short on chaos. When her mother marries Shane, a gentle giant of a farmer with a complicated relationship with rival football fans, Bur finds herself pulled reluctantly into Sunday Mass, small-town life, and something unexpected: a blind date on Easter Sunday. The man's name is Gerald. He's a carpenter. He's charming. And by the end of the night, Bur is dangerously close to feeling something real — right before he vanishes without a trace.
