8 New Releases Coming to Netflix This October

As the air grows crisp and the shadows lengthen, our collective craving for thrills, chills, and all things atmospheric reaches its annual peak. October is no longer just a month; it's a full-blown cultural season, and at the heart of the celebration is the curated cornucopia of content that streaming services offer to match the mood. Leading the charge, as always, is Netflix, whose "Netflix and Chills" event has become a highly anticipated staple for spooky season aficionados. This year, a quick glance at the trending aesthetics on TikTok and Pinterest reveals a desire for a diverse range of autumnal vibes—from the cerebral dread of psychological thrillers and the moody romanticism of modern gothic tales to the comforting nostalgia of a family-friendly Halloween adventure.

The October 2025 lineup from Netflix appears perfectly tailored to meet this moment, offering a meticulously crafted slate of new films and series designed to captivate, terrify, and entertain. We're seeing major new works from horror auteurs, the return of blockbuster franchises, chilling true-crime sagas, and dark fantasy epics. This isn't just about jump scares; it's about building atmosphere, exploring complex characters, and delivering the kind of high-quality, conversation-starting content that defines the modern streaming era. Prepare to update your watchlist and settle in for a month of sublime seasonal viewing, because these are the 10 most anticipated new releases coming to Netflix this October.

The Fall of the House of Usher (Limited Series)

1. The Fall of the House of Usher (Limited Series)

From the undisputed modern master of Netflix horror, Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass), comes his most ambitious and literary project yet: The Fall of the House of Usher. This limited series is not a straight adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s short story but rather a grand, gothic remix, weaving characters and themes from across Poe’s entire body of work into a single, epic tale of a corrupt family dynasty. The series chronicles the final days of the Ushers, the obscenely wealthy family behind Fortunato Pharmaceuticals. When the heirs to the Usher fortune begin to die in mysterious and brutal ways at the hands of a supernatural woman from their past, the family's dark secrets and buried sins come to light.

Early buzz suggests this is Flanagan at his most unrestrained, blending the familial grief of Hill House with the righteous fury of Midnight Mass and wrapping it all in a cloak of classic gothic horror. The series is a showcase for Flanagan’s incredible repertory company of actors, including Carla Gugino, Kate Siegel, Rahul Kohli, and a commanding performance from Bruce Greenwood as the family patriarch, Roderick Usher. Mark Hamill also joins the ensemble in a key role. Expect a series that is both terrifying and heartbreaking, a story that uses Poe’s macabre tales to explore modern themes of greed, consequence, and moral decay. This is event television for the Halloween season, a show that will be dissected and debated for months to come and a must-watch for fans of great [suspicious link removed].

Stranger Things 5

2. Stranger Things 5 - The Beginning of the End (Promotional Event/Teaser)

While the full and final season may not drop in its entirety, October is the perfect, hallowed month for Netflix to unleash the first official teaser trailer or a major promotional event for the highly anticipated fifth and final season of Stranger Things. After the epic, feature-length episodes and darker, horror-infused tone of Season 4, the world is desperate to know how the saga of Eleven and the residents of Hawkins will conclude. The final shot of Season 4, with the Upside Down actively encroaching on the real world, set the stage for an all-out war.

The Duffer Brothers have promised that Season 5 will hit the ground running, with the scale and stakes higher than ever before. We can expect this final chapter to call back to the very beginning, focusing on the core group of characters and the dynamics that made audiences fall in love with the show in the first place. The 80s nostalgia will be potent, the monster-horror will be terrifying (with Vecna’s final plan still to be revealed), and the emotional goodbyes will be devastating. An October teaser would be a masterful marketing move, dominating the Halloween season conversation and whipping the massive global fanbase into a frenzy of speculation. The show has consistently redefined its genre, and its final act is poised to be the television event of the year.

The Watcher - Season 2 (Series)

3. The Watcher - Season 2 (Series)

Ryan Murphy’s 2022 hit The Watcher was a viral sensation, a suburban thriller that blended a chilling true story with Murphy’s signature camp and high-drama flair. The first season left audiences with a deeply unsettling and ambiguous ending, as the Brannock family, tormented by a mysterious letter-writer, finally fled their beautiful New Jersey home, only for Dean (Bobby Cannavale) to become obsessed with the house's new inhabitants. The announcement of a second season promises to delve deeper into the unsolved mystery and the psychological paranoia that infects all who enter 657 Boulevard.

Season 2 is expected to expand the mythology of "The Watcher." Is it a single person, a neighborhood cult, or something else entirely? With Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale likely to return, alongside breakout star Jennifer Coolidge as the delightfully unhinged realtor Karen, the new season will continue to explore themes of suburban anxiety, voyeurism, and the terrifying idea that your safe, idyllic home is anything but. Expect more red herrings, more eccentric neighbors, and a deepening of the central mystery that will have viewers guessing until the very end. It's the kind of show that is perfect for a rainy weekend binge when you want to feel the suspense from the comfort of your own (hopefully less-watched) home.

The Killer's Game (Film)

4. The Killer's Game (Film)

For those who prefer their October thrills to be more action-packed than supernatural, Netflix is delivering The Killer’s Game, a high-octane action-comedy starring Dave Bautista and directed by stunt-coordinator-turned-director JJ Perry (Day Shift). Bautista plays Joe Flood, a veteran assassin who, after being diagnosed with a terminal illness, takes out a contract on himself to ensure a quick and painless exit. The only problem? He discovers his diagnosis was a mistake. Now, he must fend off an army of the world's deadliest assassins, all of whom are eager to claim the massive bounty on his head, all while trying to protect his ex-girlfriend (Sofia Boutella).

Based on a popular novel, the film promises a perfect blend of brutal, expertly choreographed action and the comedic timing that Bautista has honed in films like Guardians of the Galaxy. With a stellar supporting cast that includes Terry Crews, Pom Klementieff, and Ben Kingsley, The Killer’s Game is set to be a stylish, explosive, and wildly entertaining ride. It’s the perfect counter-programming to the month's horror fare, offering a different kind of adrenaline rush that will appeal to fans of franchises like John Wick. The film's globetrotting premise also gives it the feel of a fun summer road trip movie, albeit one with a much higher body count.

The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry (Film)

5. The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry (Film)

Arriving on Netflix after a critically acclaimed theatrical run, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry is the kind of heartfelt, poignant, and beautifully acted film that offers a different kind of emotional journey for the fall season. Based on the beloved novel by Rachel Joyce, the film stars the brilliant Jim Broadbent as Harold, an ordinary man in his 60s who, upon learning that his old friend and colleague Queenie is dying in a hospice, steps out of his house to mail her a letter and impulsively decides to walk the entire 500-mile length of England to see her, believing that his act of faith will keep her alive.

This is not a thriller in the traditional sense, but its emotional stakes are incredibly high. Harold’s journey forces him to confront his past, his regrets, and the quiet grief that has defined his marriage to his wife, Maureen (Penelope Wilton). It’s a film about kindness, human connection, and the quiet heroism of putting one foot in front of the other. The stunning shots of the English countryside in all its autumnal glory make it a visually beautiful and contemplative watch. It’s a perfect film for a quiet afternoon, a moving and ultimately uplifting story that proves a journey doesn't need to be loud to be powerful. It's a film that will stay with you, much like the best feel-good summer movies.

Damsel (Film)

6. Damsel (Film)

Adding a dose of dark fantasy to the October lineup is Damsel, a highly anticipated film starring and executive produced by Millie Bobby Brown. The film cleverly subverts classic fairytale tropes. Brown stars as Princess Elodie, a dutiful young woman who agrees to marry a handsome prince, only to discover that his family intends to sacrifice her to a dragon to repay an ancient debt. Thrown into a cave with the fire-breathing beast, this is not a story about a damsel in distress waiting for a prince to save her. It’s about a resourceful and resilient young woman who must rely on her own wits and courage to survive.

Directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later), Damsel promises to be a visually spectacular and action-packed adventure with a dark, thrilling edge. The supporting cast includes heavyweights like Angela Bassett, Robin Wright, and Ray Winstone. The film’s blend of fantasy, action, and survival horror makes it a perfect fit for the Halloween season. It’s a story about female empowerment, a twisted fairytale that gives its princess agency and a sword instead of a crown. For fans of fantasy worlds like The Witcher, this is a must-watch.

The Electric State (Film)

7. The Electric State (Film)

From directors Joe and Anthony Russo (Avengers: Endgame) and starring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt, The Electric State is poised to be Netflix’s massive, blockbuster sci-fi event for the fall. Based on the illustrated novel by Simon Stålenhag, the film is set in a retro-futuristic alternate 1997. It follows a teenage girl (Brown) who, along with her mysterious robot companion, sets out across a strange American West to find her missing brother. The world they inhabit is a beautiful but haunting landscape littered with the wreckage of colossal battle drones from a past war.

While not a straight horror film, the source material is steeped in a specific kind of melancholy, atmospheric dread that is perfect for autumn. Stålenhag’s art is famous for its blend of mundane suburban life with vast, awe-inspiring, and slightly unsettling sci-fi concepts. With the Russo Brothers at the helm, we can expect a visually stunning epic with massive scale and action, but the core of the story is an intimate, emotional road trip. The film's unique aesthetic and high-concept, mysterious world will make it one of the most anticipated and talked-about releases of the year.

The Toll (Film)

8. The Toll (Film)

Title is speculative, representing a new "Netflix & Chills" original horror film.

The "Netflix and Chills" lineup is never complete without a handful of original, straight-to-streaming horror films designed to deliver seasonal scares. A film like The Toll would be a perfect example of the kind of contained, high-concept horror that thrives on the platform. The premise could be simple but terrifying: A young woman, arriving late at night in a rideshare, directs her driver down a dark, remote country road. The car breaks down, and they soon discover they are trapped on the road by a malevolent entity known as "The Toll Man," who demands a grim payment for passage.

This type of film excels at building suspense and a sense of claustrophobia. With a small cast and a single, isolated location, the horror is forced to be creative, relying on sound design, clever camerawork, and psychological tension rather than expensive special effects. It's the kind of lean, mean horror movie that is perfect for a late-night watch with the lights off, a thrilling and efficient scare-delivery system that has become a beloved part of the Netflix Halloween experience. The mystery behind the entity would be as compelling as any found in the great detective shows of the 2000s.

Conclusion

Netflix's lineup for October 2025 is a testament to the modern, multifaceted nature of the Halloween season. It’s a carefully curated collection that understands its audience's diverse tastes, offering everything from the high-art gothic horror of Mike Flanagan to the blockbuster spectacle of the Russo Brothers, from tense true-crime to delightful family-friendly frights. This is a slate that isn't just releasing content; it's creating cultural moments, designed to dominate social media feeds and fuel conversations around the virtual water cooler. Whether you're looking for a profound meditation on grief, a thrilling action ride, or just a good old-fashioned scare, Netflix is ensuring that your queue will be filled with perfect autumnal entertainment all month long. So, get the blankets ready, prepare the popcorn, and embrace the spooky season.
